Vancouver Fund Raising Karaoke For Flood Victims In China.
Subject
Leslie Cheung's Music
Description
Leslie Cheung is one of the first pioneers in the musical genres of Mandopop and Cantopop, reflected in his performance at a Vancouver Fundraising event for flood victims in China in 1990. While Mandopop and Cantopop are popular forms of music across Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, it's not always acknowledged how they originated as cultural products of Chinese Canadian artists. Not simply importing music from China, nor solely adopting the musical stylings of Canada, these artists used hybridized forms of both countries’ popularized genres. Cheung’s performance here is especially meaningful as a way to connect diaspora in Canada to issues surrounding their country of ancestral origin internationally.
