Description
Red polished ware formed by hand, with a red slipped surface polished to a medium-high lustre. Small lug protrudes from the belly of the juglet, sometimes referred to as a ‘nipple projection’, and possibly associated with fertility. Incised with white geometric and linear designs throughout, with three distinct patterns. The lip is adorned with concentric semi-circles, the neck is covered by horizontal and zig-zag lines, and the belly has a more complex design with four horizontal lines, and pairs of hatched parallel lines. Named for their bulbous shape, gourd juglets were found in both tombs and domestic contexts.
