As we have seen with other printer’s devices, the mark may illustrate the locale or name of the shop or of the printer. Giolito de’ Ferrari’s mark depicts a Phoenix (i.e. Fenice) rising from the fire below. Giolito’s motto is “Semper eadem”, which translates as “Always the same”. Sacrement, et de la bonne mort : erigée dans l'eglise paroissiale de Ville-Marie, en l'Isle de Montréal en Canada Description An account of the resource Published by Fleury Mesplet (1734-1794), this physically tiny work would be the first work printed by Mesplet after his arrival in Montréal in 1776. After leaving Lyon for Avignon, London and Philadelphia, Mesplet settled in Montréal on the recommendation of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790}, with whom he had collaborated on printing ventures for the American Congress. Mesplet’s luggage contained the first non-governmental press to be established in the “Province of Québec”. Mesplet published many utilitarian works, with this title being distributed to members of the Confrerie, who could boast a membership of 1000 in late-18th century Montréal. Mesplet would go on to found the La Gazette littéraire with journalist Valentin Jautard (1736-1787) (known by the pseudonym “le Spectacteur tranquille”) in 1778, but both would be thrown into prison without trial, which would put an abrupt end to their literary adventure. The wife of Mesplet, Marie Maribeau,(1746-1789) would take over the publishing reins during his imprisonment. Mesplet would establish the Gazette de Montréal in 1785, which would be bought by an Anglophone editor, eventually becoming the Montreal Gazette. Samuel Neilson inherited his printing studio from his father, printer John Neilson (1776-1848), who was the printer for the Gazette de Québec, and the most important source of printing, binding, bookselling and office supplies in Lower Canada. William Cohen was an employee of John Neilson’s printing house and would collaborate with Samuel Neilson until 1833. This work is displayed to show the techniques involved in printing music. In the earliest days of printing, when music had to appear within text, the musical passage was engraved by hand onto a metal plate and printed separately from the text. As musical works gained popularity, especially those devoted to sacred music, musical notes were cast into type. Nivelle was active in Paris from the mid-1500s to 1603, and was at least approaching 80 years of age at the time of his passing, making him the literal “old man” in the Parisian printing trade of his day. Nivelle’s mark is yet another instance of a printer using his device to drive home his shop’s location. As the imprint indicates, Nivelle is on Rue S. Jacques, aux Cycognes (i.e. cigognes, “storks” in English). It’s no surprise, then, that two storks are the prominent creatures in the centre of Nivelle’s device.
