Like their modern cousins still available today, almanacs contained information necessary for the carrying out of many aspects of everyday life. Their biggest asset was their portability. The item held by Archives and Special Collections is in remarkably good shape, its calf leather, but more importantly, the long, leather tie that was wrapped around to secure it is still intact. Typical of the almanac and visible in the item on the display is a large open pocket on one inner edge of the binding: this was intended for the storage of personal notes, invoices, correspondence etc.
