Samuel Neilson inherited his printing studio from his father, printer John Neilson (1776-1848), who was the printer for the Gazette de Québec, and the most important source of printing, binding, bookselling and office supplies in Lower Canada. William Cohen was an employee of John Neilson’s printing house and would collaborate with Samuel Neilson until 1833. This work is displayed to show the techniques involved in printing music. In the earliest days of printing, when music had to appear within text, the musical passage was engraved by hand onto a metal plate and printed separately from the text. […] Description An account of the resource Two hundred and twenty years younger than its display case neighbour Les Ordonnances et édicts du très chrestien roy de France Charles neufiesme du nom […], this item is a good example of the economic measures taken to reduce the costs of bookbinding. This item is sewn on only two supports, as opposed to the three double sewing supports seen on the spine of the previous example. The supports appear to have been lost over time, as well as the entire outer binding, although their loss allows for yet another stellar demonstration of the book sewing process. This particular sewing style shows the “sawn-in” sewing technique. As to be seen in Les Ordonnances, sewing supports were raised from the spine and had to be accommodated in the outer leather binding of the spine. Changes in aesthetic tastes had an influence in bookbinding techniques. To ensure that a spine would not display raised bands, cuts would first be made into the spine with a saw. The supporting sewing cords would then be aligned with, and inserted into, the cuts, allowing the sewing supports to be hidden and providing for a flat spine. Title A name given to the resource Dictionaire francoislatin, contenant les motz & manieres de parler francois, tournez en latin Description An account of the resource Robert Estienne (1503-1559) was the second son of printer Henri Estienne. After his father’s death in 1520, he collaborated with his older brother François and Simon de Colines (whose printer’s device we see in another item on display in this cabinet). Estienne was renowned for being one of the most erudite of his century, notably being named royal printer for Hebrew and Latin. Robert’s device is that of a serpent wrapped around an olive tree, alluding, most likely, to the tree of knowledge. However, there is a more personal meaning hidden within the device, perhaps something of an “in joke”, the Estienne printing shop was on Rue St-Jean-de-Beauvois in Paris, “at the sign of the Olive”. The motto contained within the device reads “Noli altum sapere, sed time” (“Be not high-minded, but fear”), a quote which stems from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans.
