<span style="text-decoration:underline;">English</span><br /><br />Aldus Manutius (1449-1515), active in Venice, was an Italian printer, credited for the invention of Italic type, as well as “pocket” format books (chiefly the octavo, which was easily portable, in contrast to the very large formats popular at the time). He was also said to have established the modern use of the semi- colon and revived the use of the comma. Manutius’ printing efforts were concentrated primarily on the texts of the Ancient Greek authors, such as Aesop, Xenophon, Theocritius and Homer, among others. Manutius first used his printer’s device in 1501. It depicts a dolphin wrapped around an anchor. This emblem would be copied by various dubious printers, hoping to piggyback on Manutius’ fame. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Aldus Manutius (1449-1515), était un imprimeur italien actif à Venise et créateur de plusieurs innovations techniques comme l’italique et l’utilisation l’in-octavo, un très petit format qui fait contraste avec les plus grands formats populaires à l’époque. On lui devrait également l’usage moderne du point-virgule et la relance de l’utilisation du point. Manutius a surtout imprimé les textes d’auteurs de la Grèce antique comme É́sope, Xénophon, Théocrite et Homère, notamment. Il a utiliseé sa marque d’imprimeur pour la premieère fois en 1501, soit le dauphin enroulé autour d’une ancre. Elle a éé́ à mainte fois copiée et trafiquée par des imprimeurs sans scrupule qui voulaient profiter de sa notoriété.

Watermarks were designs woven into the mould used by papermakers to cast fresh pieces of paper. Watermarks can be used to identify the papermaker, the size of paper or even the date of its manufacture. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Sur cette page on peut voir le verso de la feuille sur laquelle le portrait de l’auteur, Andrew Marvell, a été gravé. On voit facilement le filigrane créé lors de la production du papier. Les filigranes sont des dessins cousus au fil de laiton dans les formes sur lesquelles la pâte de papier est déposée au moment de la fabrication. Les filigranes permettent d’identifier le papetier, le format du papier et parfois sa date de fabrication.

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">English</span><br /><br />This is an example of paste paper, most specifically one generated with the “pull “(i.e. “pull-paper”) technique. A mixture of glue and colour pigments are applied with a brush to two sheets of paper that are imposed upon each other. Before the glue dries, the two pages are pulled apart, creating a relatively uniform design with little effort. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />On voit ici un exemple de papier dit à la colle et plus particulièrement un exemple de papier tiré. Le mélange de colle et de pigments de couleur est étendu au pinceau sur deux feuilles qui sont ensuite apposées l’une sur l’autre. Avant que la colle ne soit sèche, les deux pages sont séparées l’une de l’autre en tirant créant ainsi un motif relativement régulier avec peu d’effort.

The motif used here has been printed and then the colours added later, either by hand or via a stencil. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Le papier qui sert de couverture à cette petite comédie du XVIIe siècle offre une forme nouvelle de décoration à cette époque appelée papier dominoté. The colours chosen in this example, however, are unusual and demonstrate the limitless creativity that surrounded the manufacturing of marbled paper at this time. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Cet exemplaire de la fin du XIXe siècle offre un bel exemple du motif au peigne, qu’on appelle aussi papier d’Allemagne en raison de l’introduction de ce motif par les frères Lebreton en Allemagne. Incluant des milliers d'ouvrages touchant différents sujets comme la médecine, le droit, la littérature, la philosophie, les sciences naturelles, la géographie, les sciences, l'architecture, l'histoire, les arts, la collection comprend des ouvrages publiés en Europe et en Amérique mais également des Canadiana. On y trouve en majorité des monographies mais également des périodiques européens et canadiens des 17e, 18e et 19e siècle.

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">English</span><br /><br />This item offers us a glance at marbled paper very typical of the 18th century, with its traditional choice of colours and a design typical of the era; many similar examples are to be found in the collection. The Encyclopedie by Diderot and D’Alembert goes into great detail as to the necessary steps of creating colours and designs for marbled papers. What sets this particular example apart and why it has been chosen for display is the fact that the marbled paper is not found where typically expected, that is, as interior “endpapers” within the book. It is, in fact, covering and thus forming the exterior of the book’s binding. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />On trouve ici un exemple typique de papier marbré du XVIIIe siècle. Les couleurs traditionnelles et le motif sont très populaires à cette époque et on trouve une multitude de papiers décorés similaires dans la collection. D’ailleurs l’Encyclopédie de Diderot et d’Alembert explique en détail les étapes nécessaires à la création des couleurs et du motif. L’originalité ici vient du fait que ce papier est utilisé non pas sur les plats intérieurs, mais bien comme couverture de la reliure.

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">English</span><br /><br />The use of marbling reaches its pinnacle with this example, with its swirling motif, which appear to be created in a “freestyle” manner. Of special note with this work is the fact that the edges of the book have been decorated using a similar pattern, a technique that is relatively common. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />La beauté de l’utilisation de la marbrure atteint ici son paroxysme par l’utilisation de motifs tourniquet ou frison en forme libre, mais surtout par l’application sur la tranche d’un motif similaire. C’est une technique relativement fréquente utilisée par les relieurs qui sont aussi souvent marbreurs de papier.
