Tooled and stamped in gilt, with elaborately gilded edges, this was a binding executed for someone with a love of luxury and a disposable income of note. With paper and leather being expensive commodities due to the ever-increasing amount of titles being published and the demand by binders for materials to cover these in, it makes perfect sense for binders to reuse materials whenever possible. In general, bindings made of “recycled” materials were generally so chosen by the person requesting an item be bound. The owner of this item may have even supplied this piece of used parchment himself. The stamped ex-libris turns out to be not only a less onerous form but also one that is much more practical. We find them chiefly in library materials (don’t hesitate to search for the stamp of the University of Ottawa in its collections, chiefly found in pink), but they were also used by private owners, as in this example, Jean-Claude Dubé. M. Their biggest asset was their portability. The item held by Archives and Special Collections is in remarkably good shape, its calf leather, but more importantly, the long, leather tie that was wrapped around to secure it is still intact. Typical of the almanac and visible in the item on the display is a large open pocket on one inner edge of the binding: this was intended for the storage of personal notes, invoices, correspondence etc. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />À l’instar des almanachs actuels, les almanachs anciens contenaient des informations utiles à la gestion des affaires quotidiennes. The current binding is of calf, one which has been dyed green. While it is usually morocco leathers, that is, goatskin leathers, that are dyed a variety of colours, it is not unknown for calf to undergo a similar aesthetic treatment. Calf being a less expensive leather than morocco, this was probably an attempt by the book’s owner to have a colourful binding at less cost. The colour of the original calf is to be seen along the edges, most likely due to the loss of dye on exposure to sunlight. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Ce livre semble avoir été relié à plusieurs reprises puisque le corps de l’ouvrage a été ajusté pour s’intégrer à un nouveau format de reliure de veau teint en vert. De façon générale, seuls les maroquins (cuir de chèvre) étaient destinés à être teints de la sorte. Le veau étant un matériau moins cher, il s’agit probablement d’une tentative d’obtenir un effet similaire à moindre coût. La rareté de ce type de technique s’explique sans doute par son faible succès. On peut voir la couleur du veau original en bordure, sur les parties du cuir exposées à la lumière. These two ex-libris are associated with the same owner, namely Isodoro Fernandez, a Spanish collector and bibliophile. Fernandez’ spectacular library was sold in 2013, and his books have ended up in diverse collections across the globe. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Cet ouvrage publié à Barcelone en Espagne à la fin du XVIe siècle montre deux ex-libris différents apposés sur le plat intérieur. Ces deux ex-libris sont pourtant associés au même propriétaire soit le grand collectionneur et bibliophile espagnol Isodoro Fernandez. La riche bibliothèque de Fernandez a été vendue en 2013 et on trouve maintenant ses livres éparpillés dans diverses collections à travers le monde.
