The image of the skull resting on a pile of books invokes the imagery of the Latin motto “Memento Mori”, a warning about the vanity of all things earthly and the inevitability of death. This image is reminiscent of several Baroque paintings of the 17th century, with which Lachèvre would have been familiar. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Cet ex-libris de Fréderic Lachèvre (1855-1943), un bibliophile, critique littéraire et éditeur français, spécia- lisé dans la littérature des libertins du XVIIe siècle, est remarquable pour la finesse de la gravure. L'image du crâne reposant sur une pile de livres rappelle la locution latine «Memento Mori» qui évoque « la vanité des choses terrestres » et la mort inexorable mais qui rappelle plusieurs tableaux baroques du XVIIe siècle que Lachèvre connaissait sans doute.
