Chiefly printing the works of classical Latin authors, Gyphius published the works of many contemporary Humanists, including Erasmus (1466-1536). Gryphius also made use of the Italic type created by Aldus Manutius in his printing practice. In modern speak, he would be called an “early adopter” of Italic. Gryphius’ printer’s mark is a pun on his last name: it depicts, naturally, the mythological beast of the griffin. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Sebastian Gryphius (1492-1556) est un imprimeur d’origine allemande, mais qui fit carrière à̀ Lyon en France. Il a surtout imprimé les œuvres des auteurs latins classiques, mais également celles de ses contemporains humanistes dont Érasme (1466-1536).
