<span style="text-decoration:underline;">English</span><br /><br />A binding of parchment on cardboard, this binding has had its blind-stamped ornamentations coloured black. Its title has also been handwritten in ink on the spine. Note the demi-lune shape of the textblock’s fore-edge: this is a technique typical of bindings that were held closed with metal clasps. The outer edges have also been painted in a dark colour, which is typical of a Germanic binding. Was this text once bound within a clasped binding?
<p><br />This work displays the printer’s mark of Étienne Dolet (1509-1546) on its title page. Dolet was an extremely tragic figure in printing history. Born in Orléans, France, in 1509, Dolet was a translator, scholar and printer. Critical of the Inquistion, with purported leanings towards Protestantism, Dolet was accused of atheism and heresy. Dolet was imprisoned several times until he was executed on his 37th birthday in Place Maubert, Paris, burnt to death with his own books. Dolet’s mark depicts an axe poised over a tree branch, with the motto “Scabra, et impolita ad amussim dolo, atque perpolio. - Scabra dolo. - Durior est spectatae virtutis, quam incognitae conditio” which translates partially to “Preserve moy, ô Seigneur, des calumnies des hommes”. <br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span></p>
<br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Les décorations estampées à froid qui ornent cette reliure de parchemin sur carton ont été colorées en noir. Le titre a également été ajouté à la main sur le dos du livre. On peut également noter la forme en demi-lune de la tranche. Il s’agit d’une technique spécifique aux ouvrages appelés à recevoir des fermoirs métalliques. Les tranches ont été peintes dans une couleur foncée, ce qui est typique des reliures germaniques.<br /><br />Cet ouvrage présente la marque d’imprimeur d’Étienne Dolet (1509-1546) sur la page titre. Dolet est sans doute l’une des plus tragiques figures de l’histoire de l’imprimerie. Né à Orléans en France en 1509, Dolet est devenu traducteur, savant et imprimeur. Critique de l’inquisition, soupçonné d’être partisan du protestantisme, il fut accusé d'athéisme et d'hérésie et emprisonné à plusieurs reprises avant d’être exécuté, brûlé vif avec ses livres, sur la place Maubert à Paris à l’âge de 37 ans. La marque de Dolet présente une hache plantée sur un arbre avec la devise «Scabra, et impolita ad amussim dolo, atque perpolio. - Scabra dolo. - Durior est spectatae virtutis, quam incognitae conditio. », qui est parfois traduite en français par « Preserve moy, ô Seigneur, des calomnies des hommes ».

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">English</span><br /><br />The page on display, the reverse side of an engraved portrait of the author, Andrew Marvell, offers a wonderfully clear and visible example of the watermark embedded into the paper. Watermarks were designs woven into the mould used by papermakers to cast fresh pieces of paper. Watermarks can be used to identify the papermaker, the size of paper or even the date of its manufacture. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Sur cette page on peut voir le verso de la feuille sur laquelle le portrait de l’auteur, Andrew Marvell, a été gravé. On voit facilement le filigrane créé lors de la production du papier. Les filigranes sont des dessins cousus au fil de laiton dans les formes sur lesquelles la pâte de papier est déposée au moment de la fabrication. Les filigranes permettent d’identifier le papetier, le format du papier et parfois sa date de fabrication.

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">English</span><br /><br />The printer’s device of Nicolo Pezzana (162?-170?) recalls that of the Giunta printers where Pezzana carried out part of his apprenticeship in Venice and which he ended in 1657. Without an inscription or personalized device, this mark depicts a fleur-de-lys printed in red, ensuring that clients from his former shop would recognize him. This mark also serves to function as a sign of continuity between Pezzana and his masters. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />Cette marque d’imprimeur de Nicolo Pezzana (162?-170?) reprend celle de l’imprimerie des Giunta oû il a fait une partie de son apprentissage à Venise, et qu’il a racheté en 1657. Sans inscription ni devise, cette marque comprenant une fleur de lys imprimée en rouge promettait à Pezzana d’être reconnu par les clients de l’imprimerie où il avait lui-même travaillé, instaurant ainsi une continuité avec le travail de ses maîtres.

The marginalias annotation, as is the text itself, are in Latin, which would indicate a certain amount of erudition on the part of the text's readers.<span style="text-decoration:underline;"><br /><br />Français</span> <br /><br />Plusieurs mains et plusieurs plumes ont annoté cet ouvrage de Jérôme de Hangest, un théologien originaire de Compiègne et contemporain d'É́rasme. Les annotations comme le texte lui-même sont en latin, ce qui témoigne d’une certaine érudition de la part de ses lecteurs.

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">English</span><br /><br />This work is open to the printer’s device of Swiss printer, Johann Froben (1460-1527). Based in Basel, Froben was a Humanist scholar himself, and was acquainted with Erasmus, as well as Hans Holbein the Younger, who would not only paint Froben’s portrait but is purported to have designed Froben’s printer’s device, as well. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Français</span><br /><br />La page montre la marque de l'imprimeur Suisse Johann Froben (1460-1527). Basé à Bâle, Froben était un humaniste très proche d’Érasme et d’Hans Holbein Le Jeune à qui il donna ses premiers contrats. Holbein a non seulement réalisé le portrait de Froben, mais il aurait également dessiné et gravé sa marque d’imprimeur que l’on peut voir ici.
