<text>Composition history: "I wrote Remember because I was moved by the potent sentiment of Christina Rossetti’s text. It portrayed a relationship ending prematurely, presumably from an impending death. Though the speaker was resigned to their fate, there was also a hopeful sense of wanting to reassure their partner that it would be okay for them to move on. That’s fertile ground for musical expression, so I constructed the song by spinning these twin messages—despair versus hopefulness—throughout the piece.
INTRO:
Remember me, when I am gone away
I began the song with an unaccompanied round, intended as a quasi-echo, and calling to mind a static, quiet, dreamlike state. Then the texture coalesces into expanding homophony, like an image coming into focus, before proceeding into a complete statement of the first quatrain of the poem.
FIRST QUATRAIN:
Remember me, when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.
Here I paired a descending Soprano 1 melody with an ascending Soprano 2 melody on the words “Remember me,” representing the twin themes of despair and hopefulness, respectively. Initially, the hopefulness shines through more, as the sopranos soar over bright, happy harmonies on “when I am gone away,” before gently descending again. Next we arrive at the phrase “gone far away into the silent land.” This was actually the first musical idea that came to me when I imagined how to set this poem. Here I used long, slow whole notes on a single pitch in the Alto 1 part to give a sense of time stopping, or death. The other 3 vocal parts respond to this with faltering restatements of grief, before arriving with a mysterious dissonance on the word land, signifying that things are not fully resolved, literally. The minor tonality and escalating dynamics of the next phrases continue the emotional narrative, progressing from melancholy sadness to utter despair.
SECOND QUATRAIN
Remember me, when no more day by day
You tell me of [the] future that you plann’d:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Upon the restatement of the words “Remember me” in the next phrase, composure is regained. This leads to a gentler, less frantic plea, followed by another illustration of the speaker’s unavoidable fate, on “it will be late to counsel then or pray.” Here, the piano part is reminiscent of the death knell of a tolling bell, and the relentlessness of time marching on. Simultaneously, the vocal parts are descending gracefully before quietly resolving to a major chord, signifying the acceptance of impending death.
CLOSING SESTET
Yet if you should forget me for awhile,
And afterward remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had.
Better by far you should forget and smile,
Than that you should remember and be sad.
Here the mood brightens. To illustrate this, I established a steady forward rhythmic momentum in the piano and voice parts, intended to represent the speaker providing a path for the grieving partner to follow, toward hopefulness. After one statement, I modulate up, further emphasizing this hopeful outlook. Then the drama, volume and intensity increase, building focus just before the impactful final phrase, “Better by far you should forget and smile, than that you should remember and be sad.” Those final lines gave me pause. It could be read as tinged with bitterness or sarcasm, but I chose to set it sincerely. The voices are quite low in their range, and quiet, representing the finality of death. The entire conflict of despair versus hope finally resolves on the word “sad,” twisting stark, dissonant harmonies into a quiet, major resolution. Hopefulness has won out over despair. I ended the song by paraphrasing the final two lines into the parting instruction: “Remember and smile,” to reinforce that interpretation/conclusion. Those words are layered in the voice parts at different speeds, and the harmonies alternate between major and minor chords. This recalls both the dualistic nature of the piece, and the quasi-echo of the introduction. But this time the echoes slowly recede toward a final, quiet, resolution" (Burrill).</text>

This song was published in the "Winchester Hymn Supplement", 1928 edition by Warren & Son, Winchester. The first of two tunes to choose from. The attempt by the Winchester Diocesan Church Music Committee to offer a small collection of hymns and tunes [divided in 3 parts: (1) for adults; (2) for older children; (3) for young children ("New Music. Songs" p. 184)] in 1923 was such a large success that it justified a more substantial volume. The 1928 publication includes "123 hymns and 14 carols together with Merbecke's Communion Service, as edited by E.G.P. Wyatt and Royle Shore." (Harding, p. 152)</text>

<text>Composition history: The head note on the score says that "In this mystical poem, Christina Rossetti surprises us with her unusual juxtapositions: 'Christmas hath a darkness brighter than the blazing noon' and 'Christmas hath a chillness warmer than the heat of June.' On first reading, these thoughts can be confusing. How can something dark be brighter than the noontime sun? And how can something cold be warmer than the summer heat? But I believe that Rossetti is using these striking contrasts to shock us into realizing that the lowly birth of Christ is more magnificent than anything else in creation, with the 'darkness' of his birth transcending even the brightest sunlight" (Bloesch). In email correspondence, the composer noted the settings origin in a request that he "create an original setting of 'Christmas Hath a Darkness' for her annual handmade Christmas card, which she's been creating for over 50 years! (She always features something interesting and original on her cards, oftentimes my own music.) This was one of the few times when someone asked me to set a particular poem to music. Usually, I choose my own poems." On a more general note, Bloesch commented, "As a composer of over 50 choral works, I was very moved by Rossetti's poetry, and found her texts to be enchanting to set to music. Her writing is direct but deceptively subtle and rich, and each reading bears more depths of meaning and inspiration. I tend to be most inspired by poetry that deals with nature and love, and her texts certainly blend these elements often enough."</text>

<text>Composition history: "While overseas in 1989 I came upon the book by Erik Routley A Panorama of Christian Hymnody - a sourcebook of hymns and other sacred texts. These four carols draw their texts from that book: the first two by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894), the third by Eustace Condor (1820-1892), and the fourth by James Lowell (1819-1891). The fact that the poets are contemporaries is quite coincidental - these are texts which appealed and which appear to form a satisfactory cycle (although individual pieces may be performed separately). Love Came Down at Christmas is a popular and widely set Christmas text, and originally appeared in Time Flies: A Reading Diary, while The Shepherds had an Angel comes from Rossetti's Poetical Works. Both texts were originally intended as hymns for children. The Childhood of Christ was also a children's hymn and is drawn from the Congregational Church Hymnal of 1867, whereas the Epiphany Carol appeared in the 1865 publication Songs of the Sanctuary. Over a number of years I have written short Christmas pieces for groups directed by John Rosser - the Summer Singers, Quintessence, the Star Quartet and his fine chamber choir Viva Voce. These four pieces are dedicated to John and Kathryn Rosser as an appreciation for their interest in my music and willingness to perform (and record) it" (Hamilton).</text>

In both carols, the melody often moves to an inner voice and the words 'in relief' appear. The singers should make this voice louder than the surrounding parts. Performers should not exaggerate the crescendi and diminuendi in the first carol except those at the work's close. In Christmas hath a darkness, singers should perform the verse which begins 'Earth strike up your music' with conviction, while the piano part (particularly the right hand) should be strong and evocative of clanging bells. The gradual relaxation of tension in the final two pages should be carefully controlled. Both pieces may be performed unaccompanied, the piano parts being ad lib. However, in the second carol, the fast scales are important. All ascending scales should be brilliant and descending, harp-like. I composed these two carols with college choruses in mind, but they are also suitable for liturgical use."</text>

<text>Performance instructions: "Before the paling of the stars is gentle and penitential, similar to plainsong, whereas Christmas hath a darkness is by contrast both strong and joyful.
