The Symphony is a setting of poetry from the books, Songs that Make Grown Men Cry and Songs That Make Grown Women Cry. I was very aware of the poem, having previously recorded the text alone on a collection of poetry I produced for CD called Poetic License. When I saw the poem in the collection I knew I would set it. There are some dissonant, complex songs in the Symphony and I felt the audience needed a 'break.' So I set this as a simple folk tune!" (Roven) "My Friend and colleague James Taylor, a vocal teacher at Virginia Common University, asked me if I had any compositions for the excellent a cappella women's choir at his university. But this song was first intended to be ugly as a joke to a friend who asked the composer to write a song for him. In the front matter of the score, the composer explained that he employed the use of major seventh intervals in this pursuit. Kookoorookoo!'" Composition history: This song was composed for The Year Book Press Series book called "Kookoorookoo and Other Poems" (1916). On the title page of the H.F.W. Deane & Sons publication, it states: "Words used by permission of Messrs. Macmillan & Co., Ltd." "Koorookookoo and Other Poems" contains 26 songs, each setting a poem from Rossetti's collection "Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book." The Preface from "Koorookookoo and Other Poems" states: "'I will set as many as you like at once.' Such a stimulating remark from an English composer at the head of his profession could not fail to turn the scales in the mind of a hesitating Editor who wondered whether he was right in suggesting the musical treatment of the charming yet simple verses of Christina Rossetti.
