La imagen representa el momento de un sacrificio humano realizado por los mexicas (aztecas). En la escena, un grupo de sacerdotes sostiene a una persona sobre una pirámide escalonada mientras uno de ellos eleva un corazón sangrante, probablemente recién extraído del cuerpo. Arriba, un sol antropomorfo parece observar el ritual, sugiriendo la conexión espiritual entre el sacrificio y la divinidad solar, Huitzilopochtli. El contexto arquitectónico implícito es una pirámide o templo, símbolos centrales en las ceremonias religiosas de Mesoamérica. La obra ilustra el carácter sagrado de estos actos, que buscaban garantizar el orden cósmico mediante la ofrenda de corazones y sangre humana. Los tonos predominantes en la imagen son marrones, rojos y beige, lo que refleja los materiales naturales como piel, tierra y sangre. El rojo, asociado con la sangre, simboliza vida, sacrificio y renovación. La figura del sol, en tonos dorados, podría representar la necesidad de nutrir la energía solar mediante ofrendas. La ausencia de colores brillantes sugiere que la imagen tiene un carácter documental o didáctico más que decorativo.
