Escrito en columnas paralelas de textos en náhuatl y español y pintado a mano con casi 2,500 imágenes, el códice enciclopédico es considerado la fuente de información más confiable sobre la cultura mexica, el imperio azteca, y la conquista de México. Una vez completado en 1577 en el Imperial Colegio de la Santa Cruz en Tlatelolco (hoy Ciudad de México), el manuscrito fue enviado a Europa, donde ingresó a la biblioteca de la familia Medici en Florencia—por eso el Códice florentino. Esta edición digital hace accesible el contenido del manuscrito a través de la búsqueda de textos e imágenes. Description An account of the resource En esta imagen del libro 7 “El sol, la luna y las estrellas, y la Encuadernación de los años” del Códice florentino, se puede ver un grupo de personas que parecen pertenecer a la misma tribu, ya que llevan las mismas vestimentas, y son de parecida estatura. La descripción de la imagen nos hace creer que ellos no son negros, sino que se han pintado, ya que una de las palabras asociadas es “ixtlilmaca”, que significa “to have black face paint” o en español “tener la cara negra”. Ellos están en el proceso de ofrecer un hombre, que parece ser de otro pueblo (ya que tiene diferente estatura) como sacrificio humano. Es interesante notar que solamente dos de los indígenas están haciendo el sacrificio, mientras los otros cuatro agarran el hombre para que no se escape. Los cuatro, parecen ser niños que quizás estén aprendiendo las prácticas de su pueblo, mientras los otros dos parecen ser líderes. Los niños que están adelante parecen no poder mirar al hombre, e incluso parecen llorar, de una manera que casi nos hace creer que están rogando por la vida del hombre. Los niños de atrás parecen ser un poco mayores, y más acostumbrados con el ritual, aunque aún no logran poder mirar directamente al hombre. Los únicos que miran al hombre sacrificado son los que lo están quemando vivo, aunque uno de ellos talvez sea de más importancia, ya que la descripción de la imagen solo describe un sacerdote. El texto que está asociado con la imagen no es muy claro; sin embargo, describe que el sacrificio era hecho delante de un ídolo, y durante ellos encendían mucho incienso de copal. El fuego utilizado en el sacrificio, por lo que es descrito, era utilizado por multitudes "I de alli tomaã y lleuauan al aposento de los sacerdotes, que se dize mexicanos: y despues a otros aposentos, de los dichos ministros, de ydolos: y de alli tomauan, y lleuauan todos yos vezinos, de la ciudad." Los rituales, como el de la imagen, que utilizaban el fuego, eran hechos por los grupos que tenían más poder, lo que muestra que el uso del fuego era jerárquico. Era también “potencia sagrada, de purificación, protección, agregación, fundación, transformación y cómo se asimiló a las características o funciones de algunos dioses.
