Proposition générale qui se constitue des commentaires consacrés depuis 45 heures a la fusion par la presse américaine est de satisfaction, (molée) de réserve. Les réticences exprimées, s'inspirent généralement moins d'un examen méthodique de la situation, qu'elles ne proviennent des positions prices, depuis l'origine, par les différents journaux, au regard du problème français. Les journaux dévoués a l'administration, et qui ont soutenu sa politique nord-africaine, expriment une certaine crainte que les collègues du général GIRAUD ne soient écartés par l'équipe du général DE GAULLE et que celui-ci n'applique a la politique international française les tendances anti-américaines qui lui ont été souvent attribuées. (1223) Les journaux qui critiquaient, le plus vivement, l'attitude du Department d'Etat vis-a-vis du Comitê, regrettent que les désirs de ce dernier n'alent pas été intégralement satisfaits. D'une manière générale on ne peut pas doutor qu'un large crédit moral ne soit ouvert, aussi bien par la presse que par l'opinion, en faveur du Comitê et que les sentiments qui dominent ne soient un sentiment de confiance et l'ardent désir de voir les Français, suspendant leurs querelles, reprendre une place de premier plan au milieu des alliés en apportant a leur effort de guerre une coopération (totale) et sans réserve.

Dans une (réponse) écrite remise au représentant de l'UNITED PRESS, et publiée au New York Times d'hier, l'Amiral HORERT déclare notamment:

I. Que la population des Antilles désire ardemment voir la France libérée et est reconnaissante au Gouvernement de Vichy pour avoir seul assuré et continué d'assurer la défense du peuple français abandonné par le monde entier (et dont) le territoire est (occupé) par le (conqu)érant de 1940 dans des conditions qui sont connues de (tous).

(II.) Que les bases et les forces sous son commandement ne peuvent être utilisées contre l'Axe que si cette décision n'entraînait pas la nécessité d'une rébellion (1180) contre le Gouvernement français et si les Alliés permettaient que les forces françaises actuellement combattantes, (au lieu) de défendre de deux factions (l'une) soumise à l'influence anglaise et l'autre à l'influence américaine, forment un front uni (sous une) autorité unie (ayant) pleine droite souveraine pour l'empire français. Serait nécessaire également que cette décision protégeât les intérêts des Antilles françaises (ainsi) que l'Amiral les avait conservés jusqu'ici.

(III.) Que si une attaque était effectuée contre les îles chacun de leurs (habitants) serait prêt à verser son sang pour montrer son amour de la France et de la liberté.

Mais elle contient (un) certain nombre d'omissions notamment les (oeuvres) d'ANDRE MAUROIS, SAINT-EXUPERY, SAINT-JEAN, ... etc. Vous pourrez vous faire communiquer par la librairie R. CEME, rue de la Paix à Rabat, la liste des commandes qu'elle avait passée le 12 décembre aux éditeurs de la MAISON FRANCAISE de New York et qui est beaucoup plus complète. (Groupe unreadable) (1170) et à passer les commandes en plus. Les choix de l'O.R.I. (ne s'inspirent pas en effet toujours de la connaissance psychologique suffisante de la clientèle nord-africaine. La plupart des journaux de la côte est donnent l'essentiel de ce document et reproduisent ... aussi bien d'après une dépêche AF d'Alger, les passages principaux du 7 mai du général DE GAULLE.

Dans les commentaires qu'il adresse d'Alger au New-York Times, M. MIDDLETON note que, selon les milieux gaullistes de cette ville (1132) ... du ... "réponse favorable aux objections du Comité National Français et qu'elle est de nature à faciliter la venue en Afrique du Nord du général DE GAULLE." Les dépêches de Londres se font l'écho d'impression semblables dans la (capitale) britannique.

Au cours d'un entretien que j'ai eu (avec M.) LEGER, (celui)-ci m'a exposé les points de vue suivants:

I. Il est indispensable que le général GIRAUD parle et fasse parler aux Français à la radio et (347) organise des contacts avec tous les milieux et en particulier avec les chefs syndicalistes et les mouvements souterrains français. Jusque-là la France combattante à la monopole de cette propagande.
