Les dermières enquêtes effectuées au sujet de nos ressortissants à Pékin par le pays de CASTOR ont précisément porté sur leurs relations éventuelles avec les compatriotes de NINA. A Tien-tain les représentants de CASTOR nous avaient laissé entendre a plusieurs reprises qu'ils apprécieraient d'être renseignés par nos soins sur activités de ces gens, qu'ils me parviennent pas à connaître suffisamment (bien entendu nous avons fait la sourde oreille). De même, on surveille (SUV) jalousement ici les rapports qui pourraient se nouer entre les sujets d'ADOLFME et ceux de JOSHPN, dont on croit toujours la collusion possible.

Dans ces conditions je crois qu'une extrême prudence s'impose. Je comprends fort bien l'état d'esprit de CHINON, qui voit 12 un placement d'avenir. Mais il ne faudrait pas y sacrifier le présent. Si j'en (juge) par ce qui se passe en Chine du Nord, c'est un point sur lequel les Castoriens sont particulièrement chatouilleux.

On ne peut manquer, lorsqu'on étudie la situation militaire du Japon, de considérer que la perte des Philippines, en isolant Tokio des territoires du sud devrait avoir pour conséquence logique lorsqu'elle aura lieu, l'ouverture de négociations entre les belligérants.

De bons esprits parmi les Japonais s'en rendent compte et envisagent l'avenir avec inquiétude. Des hommes politiques, d'163)anciens diplomates, des (professeurs) me ... de faire les plus douloureuses confidences.

Quand on interroge les militaires, le son de cloche est différent. Sont-ils sincères, ou militaristes (auto)intoxiqués, ce qui est certain c'est qu'ils se refusent à envisager l'éventualité d'une défaite.

Quant au peuple, je l'ai déjà signalé, il est anonyme, résigné, prêt (64) à toutes les souffrances physiques, à toutes les restrictions, confiant dans ses dirigeants.

La chute de Manille déterminera-t-elle le Gouvernement à reviser sa politique?

Il est dangereux de prophétiser. Je tands cependant à penser qu'il (faudrait) une autre défaite que celle des Philippines pour abattre l'orgueil de l'armée, et que plusieurs mois devront s'écouler (65) même après l'effondrement de l'Allemagne avant que le Gouvernement puisse imposer au pays une solution de paix. ... ... faire marcher en arrière une nation entièrement militarisée.
