(2236) Les journaux de ce matin s'efforcent de modérer l'émotion manifestée hier à l'annonce de la victoire navale de MIDWAY.
Dans le "New York Times" M. BALDWIN écrit:-
"ce fut une défaite pour les Japonais mais non pas une catastrophe. Nous avons remporté une victoire mais non pas la supériorité dans le Pacifique.
Le journaliste note que d'après les informations actuellement disponibles il apparaît que les Américains n'ont engagé aucun navire dans cette bataille, et n'ont pu au dernier moment porter à la flotte japonaise le coup de grâce qui avait paru un instant possible. D'ailleurs depuis la nuit de samedi à dimanche le contact a été brisé et il est probable que la flotte (2237) japonaise est maintenant à l'(abri) à leurs possessions de WAKE et des îles MARSHALL.

L'article de NEW YORK TIMES croit que cette bataille a surtout démontré la supériorité qu'ont actuellement les avions (de terre) sur la force navale qui se risque à (approcher) des côtes." Si les H.U. veulent se livrer à des offensives contre les îles japonaises du Pacifique, ils se heurteraient eux aussi à la même défense ... des avions japonais.
De plus l'article du "New York Herald Tribune" s'étonne que les amiraux japonais, après l'expérience de (la Malaisie) et la (2238) destruction du (Prince de Galles) soient venus sans protection suffisante s'exposer trop près des côtes américaines aux bombardements des avions (de terre).
Enfin tous les journaux notent que si le danger pour HAWAII et MIDWAY est pour l'instant écarté, la situation reste (critique) sur les côtes de l'Alaska et un retour offensif de la flotte japonaise n'est nullement imprévu.

Le Premier Ministre a prononcé hier un long discours sur l'épineuse question de la conscription pour outre-mer, qui depuis si longtemps soulève des aigres préjudices à l'unité du pays.
Cherchant à ménager les deux parties, il a en somme demandé au parlement de décider le principe de cette mesure - afin de satisfaire les Canadiens-anglais - tout en s'engageant à ne pas l'appliquer qu'en cas de nécessité - afin de satisfaire (257) les Canadiens-français.
Ces ... sont sévèrement critiqués pas les (journaux d')Ottawa qui y voient des concessions à leur rival. La discussion va provoquer un heurtement dont on peut prévoir que M. MACKENZIE KING sortira sain et sauf mais non sans difficulté.
