Répondant aux instructions de V.E., je formulai les observations contenues dans son télégramme $1433^{x x}$ relatives à l'oe cupation britannique de MAYOTTE. M. DUNN en en prenant note, me fit savoir qu'aucune force américaine n'ayant pénétré dans ces îles, le Gouvernement fédéral ne pouvait être qu'indirectement intéressé par la protestation française.

J'ai jugé opportun de voir dès aujourd'hui M. JAMES DUNN, assistant de M. CORDELL HULL. Ce dernier interromptait ses vacances reprendre ses fonctions dès demain.

Il est apparent que M. SUMNER WELLES se trouve actuellement gêné par les commentaires d'une presse déchaînée et j'ai (cède) à l'opinion que si le Département d'Etat maintient des relations avec VICHY, il est résolu à ne pas tenir compte de ses protestations, interprétations ou avis.

LOUIS POST DISPARICH regrette que les Nations Unies n'osent pas passer à l'attaque (avant) d'avoir tous les atouts en main:- "Le jour où nous aurons une supériorité complète et absolue sur l'ennemi dans toutes les catégories ne viendra peut-être jamais. Mais la tradition américaine c'est d'imaginer et d'oser." Hors ces campagnes de presse il e st à noter que le comité directeur des syndicats du C.I.O. a (ordonné) à ses membres d 'envoyer par milliers au Président ROOSEWEIF des cartes postales ainsi rédigées:- "Je suis derrière vous dans votre promesse d'un second front. Il ne faut plus attendre. Notre victoire est en danger si nous (2789) n'ouvrons pas le second front dans l'ouest immédiatement." Pour tous les partisans de ce second champ de bataille, il est d'ailleurs bien entendu que l'invasion se fera sur le sol français. Notant ce (désaccord), le journaliste (WILLIAM) SIMMS reconnaissait samedi comme "inévitable que le déclenchement de ces opérations militaires soit accompagné d'une déclaration de guerre à la France.

Les dépêches venant de Londres et les commentaires de la presse américaine révèlent ce matin la forte pression actuelle sur les Anglais et Américains par l'U.R.S.S. et ses partisans en Angleterre et aux E.U. pour obtenir l'ouverture d'un (second) front.

La dépêche du correspondant du New-York Times à Londres (indique) que malgré (le) nouvel appel à un second champ de bataille présenté hier à Londres par le Docteur BENES il ne s'agit encore que d'une please illusion. On ne reconnaît pas à Londres qu'une expédition sauf contre le nord de la Norvège pourrait avoir quelque chance de succès.

Malgré ces conseils de des journalistes américains raisonnent déjà sur (2787) l'ouverture d'un second front comme s'il s'agissait d'un fait ... décision prise! - "Les préparations sont maintenant très avancées, écrit par exemple Mme MAC GORMICK dans le New-York Times.
