But they consider that the political standing of the de GALLIETS with respect to the Imperial Government and the assistance which ex-Admiral MUSELIER has received in the British country of Canada, oblige them to request the government to take a hand in the immediate re-establishment of the former regime. This re-establishment would involve, in the first place, the evacuation of the territory by the de GALLIET mercenaries, and the replacement of our own officials. The Under-Secretary of External Affairs then tried to avoid the issue by insisting on the two following arguments: 1) Explaining the danger to which the position of the island exposes the transports. I remarked to him that our government would certainly not refuse to discuss steps which would be necessary, once the former state of affairs was re-established. 2) (A corrupt passage follows.) Finally, he avoided clarifying his position, saying that his government was in close touch with Washington on the matter, and that a solution was awaiting the results of conversations in Washington with the French Ambassador. Besides the Prime Minister would get in touch with me without delay.
