Une dépêche de Vishy de l'URITED PRESS, retardée dans sa transmission, annonce qu'au cours d'un déjeuner, le nonce du Pape a indiqué au Maréchal Pétain que le (SaintPère) désapprouvait les mesures prises contre les Juifs, tant en zone libre qu'en zone occupée.

Au cours d'une seconde interview, Monseigneur VALERIO VALERI aurait dit au Maréchal que le Pape "lui demandait de mettre fin aux arrestations inhumaines d'une population sans défense". La même dépêche annonce qu'à la suite de cette intervention, le Maréchal aurait demandé aux autorités d'occupation de limiter les mesures prises contre les Juifs en zone occupée, aux Juifs étrangers, et que l'ordre donné de procéder à des arrestations en (2928) zone libre, en particulier à Lyon, aurait été (annulé).

La presse de ce matin présente la situation aux Indes sous un jour pessimiste en rappelant que vendredi prochain le parti du Congrès se réunira a Bombay avec l'intention dite de ratifier l'appel à la désobéissance civile adressé par GANDHI aux masses, si la Gouvernement britannique ne capitule pas, GANDHI est allé jusqu'd écrire hier dans son journal que le mécontentement aux Indes pourrait s'exprimer par des sentiments de bienvenue pour les Japonais si ces derniers débarquent dans le pays. Il a invité également les princes a s'entendre avec le peuple (s'ils ne) veulent pas disparaitre.

La presse rappelle que la Ligue est opposée a l'action du parti du Congrès et que les intouchables (n'y sont) pas entièrement favorables. D'autre part (2923) l'organisation ouvrière peu nombreuse mais active et communiste serait opposée à une grêve générale. Mais l'influence du Congrès sur les masses n'en reste pas moins considérable surtout au Bengale, province menacée par le Japon.

Devant cette situation le Gouvernement britannique, fidéle à sa politique traditionnelle de soutenir des minorités, déolare par la voix de Sir STAFFORD qu'il ne cédera pas aux menaces (2924) du Congrès.

Relevant une suggestion du président du Congrès panIndien que les Nations-Unies "fassent quelque chose" et sa déclarstion que "quelques mots de ROOSEVELT" pourraient (éviter) une crise, M. SIMNS pense que la Grande-Bretagne devrait proposer aux Alliés de contre-signer en bloc l'engagement qu'ils ont pris de donner aux Indes leur indépendance après la guerre.

Il y a lieu de noter que cette idée reste très en deçà d'une proposition analogue déjè faite par M. GANDHI (mes télégrammes $2615-16^{e}$ ).
