Quelques critiques assez rares sont à relever dans la presse ... jettent une ombre sur le (concert) d'éloges qui avait accueilli hier le discours de M. CORDELL HULL.
Un éditorial du New York Sun estime "que les maximes philosophiques ne suffisent plus à calmer notre appétit. Nous voulons un peu plus de détail et un peu plus de précision. Le discours de M. CORDELL HULL ne nous a pas apporté grand'chose à nous mettre sous les pieds. Nous voulons savoir en particulier quelles sont les intentions du Gouvernement américain à l'égard de Vichy et des Français Combattants.
Par ailleurs, un éditorial du NEWS SYNDICATE estime que M. CORDELL HULL "parle de la Charte de l'Atlantique avec la même vénération qu'un chrétien en face des 10 commandements ou un mahométan devant le (2638) Coran. Et pourtant la Charte de l'Atlantique (n'est qu') un accord personnel entre MM. ROOSEVELT et CHURCHILL, non ratifié comme traité par le Sénat des E.U. M. HULL nous propose d'assurer après la guerre la police des nations unies (afin qu'elles) deviennent démocrates. Nous jugeons cela de la simple ... L'âge d'or de MM. ROOSEVELT et HULL se terminera comme au moyen âge par des ... semblables à celles de l'an 1000."

Le Département s'inquiète des lenteurs mises
à la rapatriation (sic) d'un certain nombre de fonctionnaires de Saint-Pierre et Miquelon qui auraient exprimé le désir de retourner en France. Il s'agit de MM. MACE, chef du service .... DE(L)ORT, chef du service radio-électrique, DE BEUF et OURCIVAL, météorologistes, P(O)UJGLS et PAHIS, gendarmes, Docteur GAU et famille et Docteur ALFRED ROBERT et famille.
Le Département d'Etat m'a fait savoir, les 12 et (275) 19 juin dernier, que le visa de transit à travers les E.U. a été accordé à ces personnes et que les autorités dissidentes de Saint-Pierre et Miquelon ne s'opposent pas à leur départ. Depuis cette date je n'ai plus entendu parler des intéressés, et le Département d'Etat m'indique qu'à sa connaissance ils toujours à SaintPierre et Miquelon. Je vous prie de bien vouloir me faire savoir si le Gouvernement canadien a accordé un visa de transit à ces personnes et si vous avez été appelé vous-même à vous occuper de cette affaire.

Message To: 2844-2845.
La White House a fait connaitre ce matin le texte de la lettre par laquelle l'amiral LEARY présente au Président sa démission d'Ambassadeur en France. Cette lettre est datée du 18 juillet, c'est-à-dire, trois jours avant la date où l'amiral a pris ses nouvelles fonctions de Chef de l'Etatmajor personnel du Président.
La lettre de l'amiral est ainsi rédigée:- "Cher Monsieur le Président, afin de me permettre de consacrer toute mon activité à la défense nationale, je désire vous offrir ma démission d'Ambassadeur en France. Permettez-moi de vous exprimer (ma reconnaissance) de l'honneur que vous (m'avez) conféré en me nommant à ce poste important".
La réponse du Président ROOSEVELT datée du 24 juillet est la suivante:- "Mon (2845) cher amiral, en vous appelant au service actif en tant que Chef de l'Etat-major du Commandant de l'Armée et de la Marine américaine, j'accepte votre démission d'Ambassadeur en France. En le faisant je (déaîre) que vous sachiez combien a été grande ma satisfaction de la manière dont vous avez accompli une (tâche) extrêmement difficile à un (moment) extrêmement difficile. Je (déaîre) aussi que vous sachiez combien (je suis) heureux du parfait accord qui a existé dans notre politique nationale concernant la France (pendant) etre ambassade. Comme on le dit dans la marine "Well done". Toujours sincèrement votre ami, ROOSEVELT".
