Je me réfère à télégramme d'Alger du 16 septembre
communiqué au Département.

Je suis intervenu au Département d'Etat dans le
sens indiqué. Le directeur des affaires du Royen-Orient m'a
promis de vérifier sous quelles conditions et dans (quelles) limites
les reconnaissances de l'indépendance de la Syrie et du Liban par
(5724) la Grande-Bretagne, la Pologne et l'U.R.S.S. étaient inter-
venues, et m'a donné assurance que le Gouvernement américain, s'il
avait décidé d'aligner sa position à celle de ces puissances,
n'avait pas intention aller plus loin qu'elles dans cette voie.

Il me tiendra au courant des (progrès) de cette
recherche et des conclusions qu'il en tirera.
