In reference to my telegram no. 358a -59b of 28 April and to telegram no. 241a from the Department.

In view of the ambiguous situation which has entailed a catastrophic rise in prices, since the drawing up of the estimate for the repair of the roof of the consular building, the contractor is now asking for 700,000 instead of 302,000 C.R.B. dollars for doing the job.

As I have informed the Department it is important, considering the extreme age of the building, that the work be finished before the beginning of the rainy season; that is why I feel that I must request that the credit be raised to 189,000 instead of 81,000 francs.

As the time fixed by the contractor expires 5 June, please be kind enough to let me know your answer immediately.
