No. 10811
For War Insurance, on the subject of the ALBERT SARRAUT
disaster.
1. The ship loaded with coal was struck by a torpedo at
2000 o'clock seven miles off Cape Padaran, damaging the screw and
sausing water to enter the hold No. 3. 12 November between 12 and
1 A.W. the Captain decided to beach the vessel in Cana Bay to
avoid losing it. At Cana temporary repairs were made under orders
of the Captain and the Marine Engineer. The ship was floated again
by transferring the coal to other vessels. There was no "No cure,
no pay" contract. Repairs were considered ready 23 November and
the ship arrived at Salgon 25 November.
2. Repairs were made by the Salgon Navy Yard without
calling for bids, upon orders by the expert designated by the court
which also named the agent of the CHANGEURS NEURIS as adjuster to
award the general damages.
3. At the moment, it is impossible to give the figures
requested, as the adjuster has not yet completed his report.
4. The adjuster states only that the replacement of the
screw, the cost of which is 8550 Plastres, is an item of damage
definitely chargeable to War Insurance, from which he requests a
separate settlement.
I beg you to give me instructions for this payment as well
as for the sale of the old screw, which has become the property of
the insurers. The ALBERT SARRAUT was built in 1921.
