Message No. 256. Urgent.

The French Government has learned with satisfaction of the declaration in which the government of the United States has repudiated the action undertaken against St. Pierre and Miquelon. But they consider that the political standing of the de GALLIETS with respect to the Imperial Government and the assistance which ex-Admiral MUSELIER has received in the British country of Canada, oblige them to request the government to take a hand in the immediate re-establishment of the former regime. This re-establishment would involve, in the first place, the evacuation of the territory by the de GALLIET mercenaries, and the replacement of our own officials. The French Government attaches the greatest importance to obtaining immediately precise details concerning the measures taken by the interested governments in this matter.

DIPLOMATIC.
