I also drew his attention, in passing, to the fact that when the agreement was made in April 1941 the U. S. were still non-belligerent and we could inform Admiral LEANT of the movements of the DUNQUENQUE without any risk, but since the entry of America into the war as an ally of Great Britain such information could not be given without danger to the ship or embarrassment to the U. S.
I raised the question of the articles which have recently appeared in the American press suggesting that the Allied fleets should repeat in ... a "Pearl Harbour" or "Merelke ..." ... such an attack can be launched.
In spite of these arguments M. HULL retains his point of view that our conduct has been contrary to our pledged word.
