Généralement, les selles métisses étaient fabriquées par les femmes de la communauté. Le coussin de la selle était fait de cuir et rempli d'herbe ou de crin de cheval avant d'être décoré de perles, de broderies ou de piquants de porc-épic. Le soin apporté aux détails de ces selles et la finesse des motifs témoignent de l'importance de l'équitation dans les pratiques de chasse métisses, influencées par les Premières Nations des Plaines comme les Cris. Des selles comme celle-ci témoignent du remarquable travail et du savoir-faire artisanal des femmes au sein des communautés métisses. Les « jambes » qu'on voit accrochées au sac sont un élément qui rappelle les sacs anishinaabes dont ils s'inspirent, lesquels étaient fabriqués avec des peaux d'animaux dont les pattes étaient encore attachées. Pour les Métis, les sacs étaient généralement utilisés pour transporter du tabac, des pipes, du silex et de l'acier, ou des munitions de chasse ou de combat lors des deux résistances armées de 1869-70 et 1885. Les magnifiques motifs floraux symétriques que l'on retrouve sur le sac sont typiques des broderies et perlages métis de cette époque et témoignent du travail et de la créativité des femmes métisses du XIXe siècle.
