Paul Kane, un peintre irlando-canadien du XIXe siècle, a joué un rôle important dans la représentation des peuples autochtones du Nord-Ouest pour un public euro-canadien. Ce tableau ne fait pas exception, représentant un homme Métis dans un traîneau à chiens près de ce qui est aujourd'hui Edmonton, en Alberta, connu à l'époque sous le nom de Fort Edmonton ou Fort-des-Prairies en français.
Comme pour de nombreux autres produits métis de l'époque, on peut observer des motifs floraux distincts sur le traîneau. L'utilisation de toboggans tirés par des chiens pour le transport hivernal témoigne également de la façon dont les communautés métisses utilisaient les animaux pour survivre aux hivers rigoureux des plaines, démontrant ainsi l'héritage cri-anishinaabe de nombreux aspects de la culture métisse dans leur utilisation des toboggans de cette manière.
