Le genre de chapeau que l'on rangeait dans ce boîtier est que typique de ce que portait européens, euro-québécois et femmes et hommes amérindiens et en particulier certains chefs hurons-wendat à l'époque. Le textile de la doublure atteste aussi de la datation de la pièce. Cette pièce est assez inusitée, en raison de son ancienneté et de son style, mais aussi parce qu’il s’agit de l’un des rares objets de ce genre dans les collections muséales. D’une façon éloquente, cette boîte témoigne du métissage culturel qui résulte des échanges entre Européens et les premiers habitants du continent.<br /><br /><span>Boîte assemblée avec de l'écorce de bouleau et cousue à la racine d'épinette de façon traditionnelle, tel l'assemblage traditionnel des paniers d'écorce utilitaires. Confection très soignée avec coutures extrêmement fines et régulières. Entièrement doublé de coton imprimé et glaçé à motifs de bandes beiges fleuries sur fond beige et de bandes bleues mouchetées sur fond blanc. Des rayures fines en bleu et en brun séparent les larges bandes en alternance. Des motifs réguliers et symétriques sont grattés en surface et recouvrent le contour du couvercle et la base du boîtier. Les motifs à double courbes et linéaires rappelant l'arbre de vie et autres. La poignée sur le couvercle est brisée.
