Description An account of the resource "This painting by Manly MacDonald was created for the Canadian War Memorials Fund, an organization established to document Canada's First World War effort. In this painting, MacDonald depicts farmerettes in the Niagara Region. There was no uniform for the farmerettes, but the young women who volunteered their services learned to war loose-fitting dressings to accommodate the heavy labour involved in working the land and broad-brimmed hats to protect against the sun. In 1918, 2,400 women served as farmerettes and assisted fruit farmers in the Niagara region."
