The work is separated into two volumes and consists of four parts (two in each volume). The first volume consists of 610 pages and includes 20 copperplate engraving illustrations as well as one map. Parts 1 and 2 (vol.1) provide a comprehensive history of the origin of Canada’s settlers and describe the religious practices, the political government as well as the marriage and education of Indigenous peoples.

The work is a highly detailed summation of the life and society of Indigenous peoples, as Lafitau draws upon direct observation from his experience living among them from 1712–1718. </text>
