Description
The Encyclopedia of the African Diaspora: Origins, Experiences, and Culture, is a book that explores the history of Black cinema and direction. It goes over the start of the Black film movement and how it was coined as “cinema of duty” due to the overwhelming documentaries that were produced. This especially ties to the topics reflected upon in this exhibit because the documentaries that were produced by many pioneering directors are the type of voice and activism that is meant by this term. This source is significant because it explores the earliest history of directing in Canada and how it even started from an African American avoiding segregation to really start an uprising in directing in Canada. This section specifically produces insight into the connection that the four following pioneering directors have connected them to each other.
