Africville Meeting for Development of Halifax

Dublin Core

Title

Africville Meeting for Development of Halifax

Description

The meeting was held in response to the July 1962 report of the development department of the City of Halifax recommending the elimination of Africville. During the meeting, Africville residents stated their opposition to the City's plans for relocating them. While the City Official addresses the people in the church it signifies its importance to the community. The pews are packed and there is obviously a high turn out in order to protest the demolition. The citizens are also disagreeing with the government worker in a calm, rational way. There are no signs of aggression, only disappointment shown by the pastor who sits next to the speaker. It was unfortunately unsuccessful but in its last months, the community showed unity and resilience. The church had a large gospel group that sang during services, expressing their relationship with God through song.
