Title
3-D Button - Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters Button, 1951
Description
A blue and yellow button created for the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in 1951. It was likely used to show that it belonged to a porter who had paid his monthly membership fee. Although sleeping car porters were only paid a meagre amount, being a part of the BSCP was worth it. It allowed them to connect with other porters to work towards a common goal: improving conditions. It was a small price to pay for an ultimately better salary in the long run. Although they likely couldn’t have worn this pin on the road (there was an extremely strict dress code), they might have displayed it on their person while not on the clock. Fighting for their future was something to be proud of.
