Image Of William Greaves On Set
Description
William Greves is an African American director who came to Canada in the 50s to pursue his dream of directing. There was no tolerance for Black people in the film industry in 1952 in the US, so Greaves moved to Canada to create his work. He moved and eventually started working with the NFB to create some of his works and express his passion. After a few years in Canada, he eventually returned to the states in the sixties during the uprising of the civil rights movement. Although he didn’t stay long and was not Canadian, Greaves helped the commencement of The Black directors of Canada. Without him being a Black man in a white dominated field that is film, it inspired and promoted others to finally expressing their work.
