The Canadian Ambassadors

Subject

The Canadian Ambassadors, led by Myron Sutton from Niagara Falls, Ontario, was the first organized Black Canadian jazz band in Montreal.

Description

In 1933, the Canadian Ambassadors, led by saxophonist Myron Sutton, relocated to Montréal and became the city’s first organized Black Canadian jazz band. The six-piece ensemble performed regularly in “white only” clubs and cabarets, including Connie’s Inn, the Hollywood Club, and Club Montmartre, introducing Montréal audiences to live swing music at a time when professional opportunities for Black musicians were scarce. The band not only entertained but also helped establish a visible Black musical presence in the city, inspiring other Black Canadian musicians to form bands. While few recordings of the group survive, The Canadian Ambassadors played a foundational role in shaping Montréal’s jazz culture and Black community identity, demonstrating creativity and professionalism that influenced generations of musicians in the city.
