Title

Portrait of Marcus Garvey

Description

Founder of the UNIA, a movement for racial uplifting in areas like industrial and educational opportunities for Black people. Even though mainly in America, it took root in Canada around 1918-1920, with Glace Bay or Montreal being the first in Canada. The UNIA had 3 chapters in Cape Breton, seeing the lack of job security, trouble securing a job, and treatment of the community. This could've been a major factor in why the UNIA was so strong in Caribbean people in Cape Breton.
