Title
Archbishop W.M.E. Robinson
Description
Photo taken at St. Philip's African Orthodox Church in Whitney Pier. Part of a larger network of churches that came to be in New York in the 1920s, originated by George Alexander McGuire from the belief that Black Episcopalians should have their own denomination. In 1921 Rev. McGuire sent William Ernest Robertson to Sydney to start the work of integrating the church into the area.
The Black people of Whitney Pier tried to go to many different churches in the area but white people were not welcoming, so they needed a church for themselves.
The church remains the only African Orthodox parish in Canada.
