<text>Black composer George Lewis composed "Lonnie and Lonie" for trumpet and piano. The work received its world premiere on November 24, 2019 by trumpeter Glen Whitehead, pianist Susan Grace, and the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs. The work was commissioned in grand collaboration between UCCS, Colorado College and the Chamber Orchestra of the Spring. <br /><br />As written in the composer's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1137016606688267">program notes provided on Facebook</a>: "This work was inspired by my twin uncles, Lonnie and Lonie Griffith, who as teenagers were frequently tasked with watching over me while my parents were at work on weekends. We would go to horror movies like Mr. Sardonicus, where the director himself calls for a vote on whether the title character should suffer or escape the consequences of his depredations. Later, at the now-defunct Illinois Slag and Ballast Company, where Lonnie and Lonie were supervisors, they got me a job cleaning out railroad cars during a particularly intense Chicago winter. Lonnie and Lonie expressed both complementary and contrasting views of the world, a circumstance that, in line with my general understanding of the important trope of depiction in American music (Ives, Ellington, and Carter, for examples), is perfectly suited to the deployment of the concerto form, which has offered composers the opportunity to enact both agonistic and cooperative dramaturgical experiences of the dialogue among soloist(s) and orchestra. I’d like to provide this small hint to you automobile buffs out there as to which soloist represents “Lonnie” and which “Lonie”: I remember when both were driving “muscle cars”--a Dodge Charger (Lonnie) and an SS396 Chevrolet Chevelle (Lonie). In the concluding double cadenza, the soloists, driving fast and noisily through the narrower streets of Chicago’s Englewood district, head each other off at the pass before the work’s emphatic, but somehow pensive conclusion. This work is dedicated to Lonnie Griffith (1947-) and the memory of Lonie Griffith (1947-2002). I would like to thank Glen Whitehead, Susan Grace, Maestro Thomas Wilson, and the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs for bringing this project to full fruition."</text>

<text>Black composer Dr. Immanuel T. Abraham composed the "24 Caprices for Solo Violin" between 2010 and 2020. <br /><br />As indicated on the composer's website: "These twenty-four caprices are my collection of advanced repertoire for unaccompanied violin written between 2010 and 2020. The number of works is a tribute to four violin performer- composers of the past whose works I have studied, performed, and taught. Each wrote a collection of 24 caprices for solo violin as well. Namely, these are Pierre Gaviniès (1728-1800), Jaques Pierre Joseph Rode (1774-1830), Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840), and Jakob Dont (1815-1888). As a performer, my unaccompanied bookings accommodate a broad range of venues. Between 2010 and 2020, these venues included large rock-concert amphitheaters, yoga summits, juried doctoral-recitals, American String Teacher’s Association (ASTA) conferences, livestream events in Nigeria, live solo soundtracking for theaters and film festivals, televised events for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and many more. For those engagements and many more, I wrote and performed my own music. That process immediately granted the realization of my most authentic output as a musician— my twenty-four caprices for solo violin. As such, all of them are very personal, and an ever-deepening experience to perform. There is something here for a wide range of violinists. This collection contains clear influences of the baroque (3 fugues), romanticism, impressionism, jazz, American fiddle, rock, tango, and more. These are all new, tonal, and eclectic compositions that purposefully fill gaps I experienced in the extant solo violin repertoire. Over the years several of these have been distributed individually. I have enjoyed many brilliant performances by colleagues, professors, students, and other artists. Here, for the first time, all twenty-four are presented together. I enthusiastically look forward to every performance following this edition!"</text>

<text>Black composer David Wilborn composed "Jazz Triptych" for bass trombone and piano. According to Warwick Music website:

"Jazz Triptych was written at the request of English bass trombonist Jonathan Warburton. It is a setting of three diverse jazz styles in a concert setting for bass trombone and piano. Each movement captures characters and rhythmic features of a particular jazz genre. Although originally composed, each movement references the compositional style of historical masters who are credited for making their own style of jazz popular. The movements express the idea of the composer meeting each historical figure individually in an attempt to gain a better understanding of their jazz style. Figuratively, the composer sets out on a pleasant walk with each composer for an interview. The result is a fusion of compositional ideas in which both personalities (the composer and the historical figure) emerge. Each jazz style becomes an expansion of a hybrid jazz-classical style. The featured genres include: ragtime, tango and boogie."

<text>Black composer Chad "Sir Wick" Hughes fell in love with cello suites in 1995. <br /><br />As written on his website, "As I came home (to the dorms) from marching band practice at the University of Michigan, I heard not only a glorious euphonium sound, but I heard this beautiful melody in C coming from the dorm's practice rooms. I had to find out who and what it was. As I knocked on the door, I introduced myself and then met Matthew Summers, a fellow music major (now currently in the President's Own Marine Band. A week or two later, we went to the library so I could get my own copy of the music. Coincidently I had just met Leo Eguchi and Minitria Slade who were violoncello performance majors. They had a sound that was just quite mesmerizing. I would ask them questions repeatedly so I could learn how to write for this instrument. I had no idea about bowings, double-stops, bow techniques. I was a kid in a candy store. Years later, the tuba/euph studio at UM had to learn various movements from the cello suites. I went to the library to grab some recordings. Somehow someway, the video of Mstislav Rostropovich performing the Suites was already playing in the library. He quickly became my favorite cellist. Maybe it was the quality of his CDs. His tone just captured me. The musicality of his cello suites got me hooked on his first note. Forever a fan! Right around the time I was about to graduate, I ran into our cello professor, Anthony Elliott. He kindly asked me to write him a piece. I was floored. No professor had ever asked me that. Honestly, I was nervous. I hadn't really written solo music before, mostly orchestra music. Unbeknownst to me, Prof. Elliott was putting together a concert and CD of African-American compositions. I just used Bach as my mode and listened over and over to Rostropovich. I didn't write six movements as he did, but decided to use the dance forms."<br /><br /> The "First Suite for Solo Violoncello" has a minuet, courante and gigue.</text>

It was written during a very modest time in my compositional development, where color and form were at the very heart of each work. I sought to write a sonata that was timeless, almost classic in color and emotional range, and tells a very captivating story through the tapestry of its harmonic language, and stark rhythmic shifts. The oboe is a widely expressive instrument with many emotional colorations, from the whimsical, to the utmost passionate melodic phrases. I wanted a "classic" contemporary model of what an early 21st century oboe sonata could be. It is my great hope that all who listen to this work enjoy it as much as I loved composing it."</text>
