<text>Black composer Zenobia Powell Perry wrote on "Homage" for piano in 1990. As described in a short article by Elizabeth Smith on Homage:

"Homage is a movement in the set Piano Potpourri. Composed in 1990, it employs a wide variety of different textures and techniques, including octaves, dense chords, and chromaticism. Homage is dedicated to black composer William Dawson, and is based on the spiritual “I’ve Been Buked and I’ve Been Scorned”, which is played unaccompanied at the beginning of the piece. It would be a good fit for a student at the advanced level due to the jumps in the left hand and complex pedaling, and the student would have to be a strong reader to notice the subtle changes between similar motives.

Homage is published in the anthology Black Women Composers: A Century of Piano Music (1893-1990) edited by Helen Walker Hill and published by Hildegard Publishing.

Zenobia Powell Perry (1908-2004) was a composer, professor and civil rights activist. She taught in some historically black colleges and universities. Her musical style is described as “music with clear, classic melodies.” She studied piano and violin in her childhood. Her most powerful musical experience was hearing Hazel Harrison (African-American pianist) in a concert."</text>

We do not have any information about the first performance of the Prelude, but on June 1, 1983, Ivan George Taylor performed these pieces on his Senior Recital at Central State University, with the composer at the piano. The work was performed in February 1987 by Louise MacGillivray, horn, and Deon Nielsen Price, piano, as part of the Symposium and Celebration of Black American Women in Music at California State University, Northridge. As with all her compositions, there were several revisions. Thanks to Will Winter in Gainsville, Florida, for his assistance with editing these pieces for publication." The movements, Prelude, Air, Minuet, and Gigue each stand on their own.

The flute and oboe perform polyphonic and homophonic imitative and competing textures coupled with moments of florid unison sixteenth-note passages. Driving motivic rhythms carry the Prelude, Minuet, and Gigue movements, while the lyrical adagio Air contains shorter phrase lengths in wider intervals. The Minuet and Gigue are presented as traditional dance forms with lively, rhythmically accented exchanges in both voices. A keen ear and technical dexterity are required of both instruments."</text>
