<text>A Sunrise Elsewhere is an attempt to characterize the sky’s continuous transformation during dawn and dusk. The title references the fact that each sunset is simultaneously a sunrise in another location – accordingly, the piece is a palindrome with respect to form and harmony (A‐B‐C‐B’‐A’).

The piece begins with all three voices in equally emerging roles. The flute then has soloistic material over a harmonic line in the vibraphone and viola that gradually increases in rhythmic activity. The three voices become furiously intertwined and then switch roles – the viola takes on an affected and dramatic lyricism while the flute and vibraphone continue the harmonic line, this time progressively subsiding. The piece ends in reverse with regard to how it began – receding into the distance.

The title can also be taken to represent a strange alien sunrise taking place on a distant planet.</text>

What seemed to be a routine trip soon turned into canceled flights, sixteen hours in an airport, lots of time alone, and a seventy-five minute drive before making it back to Greensboro. <text>The Chinese Zodiac Suite is the culmination of a three-year project to honor the partnership of Old Dominion University with Minzu University of Beijing, a cooperative effort to bridge the cultures of both sides. In his new composition, Hailstork uses Western musical language to depict the 12 animal signs of the zodiac from Eastern folklore. The suite was performed by the Minzu University student orchestra at a meeting with the Board of Directors of the Confucius Institute at Old Dominion University (CIODU) in Beijing. Executive director of the CIODU, Dr. Qiu Jin Hailstork, prefaced the performance with, “You can hear the sounds of rats scratching behind the walls; cows working hard in the fields; rabbits jumping up and down; a snake slithering through the grass; galloping horses and grazing sheep; a monkey swinging through the trees; the rooster, boss of the barnyard, crowing; the sleeping dog who wakes up and starts barking; and the poor pig, so sad because his life's only purpose is to be someone's dinner!”</text>
