If it is seen that the past life has been a good one, the soul may enter “heaven,” or “Summerland”. After a period of time, the soul may reincarnate to learn additional earthly lessons on the human plane. Some souls reincarnate many times in a constant circular progress toward Godly perfection."<br /><br />Three Visions was composed by Still for his wife, Verna Arvey, who first played the composition in Los Angeles in 1936.</text>

Maria represented the increasing strength of natural disasters and the intense, sometimes deadly, repercussions of climate change. While this was going on, there was also a rise of political and social turmoil in the United States, and global unrest throughout the world, including the Civil War crisis in Syria. For weeks, the news was flooded with these stories. With so many people throughout the world dealing with tragic domestic issues, I began to think about the meaning of home during a crisis. What does home mean when the land has been destroyed? What does it mean when there’s been a political disaster, or a human disaster? How does a person feel patriotic when they feel unwelcomed at the same time? Homeland is a musical interpretation and exploration of those questions. The flute opens with timbral trills representing troubled waters, then transitions into passages that are anxious and distorted. There is a moment of hope and optimism, a remembrance of past struggles that have been overcome, followed by an off-putting play on the Star Spangled Banner, representing an unraveling of patriotism. In the end we come full circle, still with unanswered and unresolved questions." <br /><br />Commissioned by The Texas Flute Society for the 2018 Myrna Brown Competition.</text>

Each of its three movements explores a spectrum of moods and tempi, with thoroughly braided paths of interrelated themes. While the sonata starts with a wink at Bach as a diving-in point, its development and overall profundity are more akin to the monuments of later musical literature."</text>

The cello's range and tone evoke the baritone voice, and its facility in contrapuntal playing allows for polyphony in the manner of Bach's cello suites. The theme (sounding like a spiritual) is actually the final chorus of the composer's "Earthrise," a profoundly bold cantata using Schiller's "Ode to Joy" as text, and full of allusions to all four movements of Beethoven's ninth symphony. Hailstork's "Earthrise" features a festival chorus singing in German, alternating with an African-American chorus singing in English with vernacular verve. The choruses ultimately unite to end the cantata together with "Draw the Sacred Circle Closer," a translation of lines from Schiller's "Ode to Joy." For advanced cellists."</text>

Cast in a formal mold inspired by the Bach partitas, Hailstork’s four-movement Suite for Solo Violin begins with a perky Prelude, followed by a March with a few subtle winks at music from the Prelude. The third movement is a beautiful Melody with slow-fast-slow form, and the Finale incorporates a few remembrances of the previous movements in building a dramatic drive to the finish."</text>

She escaped back to her homeland and gave birth to a son who became the founder and monarch of Korea’s northern kingdom. The symbolic willow tree is considered a source of healing in Korean folklore and elsewhere around the world. Hailstork’s 6-minute depiction is a luscious mix of innocent (and catchy) melody, blended with fascinating drama and texture to create a concert work that both stands on its own as pure music and depicts the legend of the goddess Yuhwa." <br /><br />Premiered August 4, 2020 on Facebook Livestream.</text>
