<text>Black composer Jeff Scott wrote "Of Good and Evil" for oboe and piano. As written by the composer on the TrevCo publisher's website:

"I’m drawn to the subject of good versus evil. Goddesses and demons, angels, and devils – I find it all fascinating and great source material for composing. In Of Good and Evil, the piano introduces the Devil’s motif in the opening bars of the first movement. Sweetly determined, the oboe dances with the darker angels, fighting to stay in the light, but temptation is always present – menacing, taunting, seducing, raging….Of Good and Evil was commissioned by Toyin Spellman-Diaz, and it affords me the opportunity to showcase an artist’s unique gifts."

The work has three movements:
1. Waltz with a Devil
2. In Judgement of Mankind
3. Fly with the Orishas
(*Note: The second movement can be sung or performed on oboe)

Based on the traditional Kiganda pentatonic music of Uganda, Tamusuza uses many unusual extended techniques in order to make the modern horn achieve the sounds and inflections of African vocal and percussion music: eggono note bends, quartertones, harmonics (played with tuning slides removed), African ostinatos and drumming effects with the mute. Short, colorful and visually dramatic. Featured in the February 2007 edition of The Horn Call."</text>

Carlos Prieto and Alvaro Bitrán premiered the work on June 3, 2009 at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo MARCO, in Monterrey, Nuevo León in Mexico." <br /><br />The Dances were composed for cello, but have been arranged for Contrabass, Flute, Bassoon, and Piano. <text>Japanese composer Dai Fujikura's "Samarasa" was composed in 2010 with a new version in 2014. <br /><br />As written on his website, Fujikura states: "'Samarasa' is a rough translation for 'mind at rest' in Sanskrit. I composed this piece for the violinist Hae-Sun Kang who is with Ensemble InterContemporain, commissioned by the Messiaen Festival which takes place in the French Alps. As I set to work on this piece, my focus fell on the right arm of the performer and the movement and speed of the bow. Whereas contemporary music tends to focus on the pitches (which would be the performer’s “left hand”, and its fingering) - and quite understandably so - I was more fascinated with the right arm, as was the case with my viola piece “flux”. The first part begins with the same note being played alternately on three strings, where the violinist’s bow maintains its normal movement while the “left hand” shifts geographically on violin’s fingerboard. This unconventional method produces an irregular kind of melody. During the compositional process I tried drawing the neck of a violin on a piece of paper and placing my fingers along it. The constant cross-string technique employed in the piece is another “unnatural” characteristic unique to string instruments."</text>
