<text>Black composer Jeff Scott wrote "Of Good and Evil" for oboe and piano. As written by the composer on the TrevCo publisher's website:

"I’m drawn to the subject of good versus evil. Goddesses and demons, angels, and devils – I find it all fascinating and great source material for composing. In Of Good and Evil, the piano introduces the Devil’s motif in the opening bars of the first movement. Sweetly determined, the oboe dances with the darker angels, fighting to stay in the light, but temptation is always present – menacing, taunting, seducing, raging….Of Good and Evil was commissioned by Toyin Spellman-Diaz, and it affords me the opportunity to showcase an artist’s unique gifts."

The work has three movements:
1. Waltz with a Devil
2. In Judgement of Mankind
3. Fly with the Orishas
(*Note: The second movement can be sung or performed on oboe)

The exact mechanism that produces these unchanging tones is a mystery to me (another way of saying that having perfect pitch may be convenient but doesn’t guarantee a mechanical engineering degree). I’ve hijacked that three-note-motif tonight, relocating it from the raucous underworld to the clean acoustic canvas of this concert hall and transforming into a musical composition for Flute, Viola and Harp. Eager to dance in its new disguise, the motif is having a field day out here. Please dance with it for the next few moments because it’s sure to escape back to the subway stations before the MTA notices and causes delays."</text>

The famous song "Manha de Carnaval" by Luiz Bonfá is the main theme of the piece, which is the theme and variations backwards. There are a total of thirteen variations, culminating in a dramatic return of the Bonfa song. Todas as Manhãs notonly tells the story of Black Orpheus but also shows a variety of techniques, rhythms, and colors characteristic of Brazilian dances. Inspired by the various species of butterflies inhabiting the continent, this work is full of rich color, with butterflies dancing and weaving in syncopated rhythms while alternating between the feel of 3 over 4 throughout. Its slower sections pay homage to the beautiful and sorrowful sounds in the style of Yaravi, a Peruvian lament song. The melodies and rhythm eventually evolve into the spirit and syncopation of Argentinean concert tango, and the conclusion returns to the feel of Yaravi. For advanced players." It was not my intention to, necessarily, text paint each word of the poem; rather, I tried to evoke the essence of the poem’s meaning. In one word, Nonaka describes her poem as being about ‘resonance.’ A natural term in the music world, the word ‘resonance’, figuratively speaking, can also mean evoking images, memories and emotions, which she beautifully achieves in Harvard Square. This composition is for the virtuoso flutist, utilizing various extended flute techniques. for example, the composition begins with the flute playing bamboo tones, a way for the modern western flute to, by using nontraditional fingerings (which I notated in the score), sound like a shakuhachi flute, a Japanese bamboo flute."</text>
