<text>Japanese composer Dai Fujikura's "Samarasa" was composed in 2010 with a new version in 2014. <br /><br />As written on his website, Fujikura states: "'Samarasa' is a rough translation for 'mind at rest' in Sanskrit. I composed this piece for the violinist Hae-Sun Kang who is with Ensemble InterContemporain, commissioned by the Messiaen Festival which takes place in the French Alps. As I set to work on this piece, my focus fell on the right arm of the performer and the movement and speed of the bow. Whereas contemporary music tends to focus on the pitches (which would be the performer’s “left hand”, and its fingering) - and quite understandably so - I was more fascinated with the right arm, as was the case with my viola piece “flux”. The first part begins with the same note being played alternately on three strings, where the violinist’s bow maintains its normal movement while the “left hand” shifts geographically on violin’s fingerboard. This unconventional method produces an irregular kind of melody. During the compositional process I tried drawing the neck of a violin on a piece of paper and placing my fingers along it. The constant cross-string technique employed in the piece is another “unnatural” characteristic unique to string instruments."</text>

In the Hindu religion, to give ‘darshan’ is to see and worship God. As Vijay and I worked on this music together over three years, we began to see the divine in one another. This movement, in Raag Charukeshi, is the first movement of five, which will be written over a span of five years. It explores grief, in its many facets and forms." "Darshan" was commissioned by Vijay Gupta. It was first premiered (in its first iteration) with Taos New Music Group in Taos, New Mexico on September 22, 2018. <br /><br />Access the audio guide: <a href="https://www.reenaesmail.com/catalog-item/darshan/">https://www.reenaesmail.com/catalog-item/darshan/</a></text>

<text>American Indian citizen of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of the Mohican Nation, Brent Michael Davids' "Wood That Sings" was composed for solo violin. <br /><br />As written on the composer's website, "Wood That Sings is composed for solo viiolin with scordatura re-tuning of its low string, evokes the rhythms and refrains of the single-stringed Apache violin. The Western violin's G string is tuned down to a low A in bass clef, creating the characteristic 'buzzy' quality that spawned the Apache violin's 'buzzer' nickname. The work contains an Apache violin-like melody and the rhythms borrow from both the duple and triple beats of indigenous songs. Western musical techniques are also incorporated, such as double, triple and quadruple stops, harmonic and tritone sonorities, and printed music notation, all of which do not occur in traditional Apache violin songs. Often twisting and leaping from one to another, the indigenous and western phrases bounce like horsehair bows would dance on either a Western or Apache stringed instrument. The work is intended to be a strong, challenging, virtuosic, shake-a-leg experience for both performer and audience." <br /><br />The work was comissiooned by Dr. Katherine McLin and edited by Michael DiBarry.</text>

<text>Black composer Jonathan Bailey Holland composed "Journal Entry" in 2020. <br /><br />As written about the work by Jannina Norpoth on the Kaufman Music Center's website: "Originally written last year for a Black History Month performance at the Detroit Institute of Arts curated by Grammy-nominated violinist Jannina Norpoth. The concert titled “Transitive Vision,” explored how we envision our past, present, future and ourselves — tying into how we embrace our history, our spirituality and our identity." Commissioned by violinist Jannina Norpoth, the artist wrote in depth about the work in the comments of the video she uploaded to YouTube: "his video is inspired by Jonathan’s piece which he wrote for me to perform shortly before the pandemic began in February 2020. As I recall he wrote it after a personal loss of his own. In the first few months it resonated with me as a introspective meditation for the moment. I created my own “Journal Entry” one weekend in May grieving both the death of a friend and mentor (from COVID), whose funeral was also the same day as the one year anniversary losing of my last surviving grandparent. With that in mind I dedicated the imagery to the love, vision and perseverance of my Grandparents Dr. Alwin Barefield and Bessie “Babs” Barefield (pictured at the end). My Grandmother came to Detroit from rural Mississippi town named after her family and founded by my great-great-great grandparents in 1868 post slavery - her family being one of the only Black families in the state to own a Cotton Gin, the survival of the community when so many others were destroyed by the KKK has great significance. After her funeral my mother and I spent an evening cleaning out my grandparents home - a place where I spent a significant portion of my upbringing and that flooded me with happy and bittersweet memories. My Grandfather in his prime was a well respected Doctor, graduate of Howard Medical School and Army Veteran. He did his medical internship at Sydenham Hospital in Harlem - the first hospital in NYC to integrate patients and doctors. In my Grandfather’s old study I found something that impacted me greatly. Posted on the wall was the original newspaper clipping from 1968, where Olympians #tommiesmith &amp; #johncarlos gave the #blackpowersalute during the US National Anthem. To know that this is something he looked to for daily inspiration is incredibly impactful for me. To reflect on the fact that these athletes were stripped of their medals, robbed of their careers and - what they stood for some 50 years later is infuriatingly exactly the same. I recorded this video in front of a mirror to symbolize my own reflection - of myself, my privilege, my grief, my oppression, my survival and that of those who came before me. My journal entry."</text>
