<text>Black composer Zenobia Powell Perry wrote her "Three Pieces for Horn and Piano" between 1973 and 1983.

According to the composer's biographer Dr. Jeannie Gayle Pool: "It seems that Zenobia Perry wrote these pieces for performance by Central State University students. We do not have any information about the first performance of the Prelude, but on June 1, 1983, Ivan George Taylor performed these pieces on his Senior Recital at Central State University, with the composer at the piano. The work was performed in February 1987 by Louise MacGillivray, horn, and Deon Nielsen Price, piano, as part of the Symposium and Celebration of Black American Women in Music at California State University, Northridge. As with all her compositions, there were several revisions. Thanks to Will Winter in Gainsville, Florida, for his assistance with editing these pieces for publication." (See score in sources.)

There are three movements:
Prelude (1973)
Episode I (1983, rev. 1992)
Episode II (1983, rev. 1992)</text>

<text>Black composer Zenobia Powell Perry wrote on "Homage" for piano in 1990. As described in a short article by Elizabeth Smith on Homage:

"Homage is a movement in the set Piano Potpourri. Composed in 1990, it employs a wide variety of different textures and techniques, including octaves, dense chords, and chromaticism. Homage is dedicated to black composer William Dawson, and is based on the spiritual “I’ve Been Buked and I’ve Been Scorned”, which is played unaccompanied at the beginning of the piece. It would be a good fit for a student at the advanced level due to the jumps in the left hand and complex pedaling, and the student would have to be a strong reader to notice the subtle changes between similar motives.

Homage is published in the anthology Black Women Composers: A Century of Piano Music (1893-1990) edited by Helen Walker Hill and published by Hildegard Publishing.

Zenobia Powell Perry (1908-2004) was a composer, professor and civil rights activist. She taught in some historically black colleges and universities. Her musical style is described as “music with clear, classic melodies.” She studied piano and violin in her childhood. Her most powerful musical experience was hearing Hazel Harrison (African-American pianist) in a concert."</text>

<text>Israeli-born American composer Shulamit Ran composed "Perfect Storm" for viola in 2010.

Notes on the publisher's website state: "Melia Watras, a foremost performing violist and professor of viola, has commissioned a good number of composers for new works for her instrument. In her commission of Ran, she requested that a starting point be an excerpt from any established work in the viola's repertoire of Ran's choosing. Ran immediately turned to the haunting viola solo passage from Luciano Berio's Black Is the Color (from Folksongs). While the Berio is infused throughout Ran's Perfect Storm, she has crafted a sonic landscape of varied mood, using an array of the violist's skills and techniques in an impressive concert work. See a video excerpt on YouTube from the world premiere, which includes a discussion of the work by Ran and Watras."

Dedication: In spirited gratitude to Melia Watras for her ispirare project, and to my "viola iinspiration" -- Black is the Color...from Folk Songs (1964) by Luciano Berio</text>
