The cello's range and tone evoke the baritone voice, and its facility in contrapuntal playing allows for polyphony in the manner of Bach's cello suites. The theme (sounding like a spiritual) is actually the final chorus of the composer's "Earthrise," a profoundly bold cantata using Schiller's "Ode to Joy" as text, and full of allusions to all four movements of Beethoven's ninth symphony. Hailstork's "Earthrise" features a festival chorus singing in German, alternating with an African-American chorus singing in English with vernacular verve. The choruses ultimately unite to end the cantata together with "Draw the Sacred Circle Closer," a translation of lines from Schiller's "Ode to Joy." For advanced cellists."</text>

We do not have any information about the first performance of the Prelude, but on June 1, 1983, Ivan George Taylor performed these pieces on his Senior Recital at Central State University, with the composer at the piano. The work was performed in February 1987 by Louise MacGillivray, horn, and Deon Nielsen Price, piano, as part of the Symposium and Celebration of Black American Women in Music at California State University, Northridge. As with all her compositions, there were several revisions. Thanks to Will Winter in Gainsville, Florida, for his assistance with editing these pieces for publication." (See score in sources.)

There are three movements:
Prelude (1973)
Episode I (1983, rev. 1992)
Episode II (1983, rev. 1992)</text>

<text>Black composer William Grant Still (known as the "Dean of Afro-American Composers") wrote the "Three Visions" suite in 1935 for solo piano.

As written in the Wikipedia article on this work, the composer's daughter Judith Anne Still indicated that "The three segments of the suite, Dark Horsemen, Summerland, and Radiant Pinnacle, tell the story of the human soul after death: the body expires, and the soul goes on to an apocalyptic judgment. If it is seen that the past life has been a good one, the soul may enter “heaven,” or “Summerland”. After a period of time, the soul may reincarnate to learn additional earthly lessons on the human plane. Some souls reincarnate many times in a constant circular progress toward Godly perfection."

Three Visions was composed by Still for his wife, Verna Arvey, who first played the composition in Los Angeles in 1936.</text>
