Birth Date 1893 Birthplace Williamsfield Estate, Jamaica Occupation Planter, Soldier Biographical Text After finding no glimpse of Henry Morgan Jones in the US and UK archives as well as the ancestry website and the Creole, Barbados, Caribbean archives—I finally found him among the “Lives of the War” website which connected me to the Canadian Great War Project. The information I found was mostly all known to me after examining his PDF documents attached to the assignment. However, this page connected me to yet another source of information on him located at the Library and Archives Canada website (This brought me back full circle to the original PDF (54 pages) that I had examined previously). The Library Archives Canada website clarified Jones’ wedding date of January 3rd, 1917, which was listed in the PDF document as both January 3rd, 1917, and June 2nd, 1917. The Library Archives also shows that Jones at some point during the war changed his religious beliefs from American Friends to the Church of England. Being that his PDF shows him getting married in England it look as if Jones may have converted upon marriage. Henry Morgan Jones was a part of the no. 2 Construction Battalion, and as the Canadian Encyclopedia outlines, this was a labour battalion that began accepting black soldiers in July of 1916 (Ruck 2016). Jones enlisted only one month after recruiting began and was sent to England and France to train and do physical labour with no. 2 battalion. Something that I find very interesting is that all his medical documents declare him fit, but halfway through his documents (page 21) it states that he had bronchitis at the end of the war. His weight is also recorded several times as being consistently 160 lbs (pg. 15, 21) but it is recorded as 138 lbs on pg. 19. The Canadian Encyclopedia highlights that the “Canadian Forestry Corps urgently needed labour to support its forestry operations in the Jura mountains in southeast France.” (Ruck 2016) In theory, since Jones’s trade was a planter and his location was France, he was a necessity to the no. 2 battalion and therefore even though he was sick and lost a significant amount of weight was not discharged due to his useability. Chapter Six of the text tells us that other minority groups including Chinese and indigenous men were allowed to serve and even women (in certain positions) yet black soldiers were not “permitted to serve.” Therefore, the no. 2 battalion could be considered a glorified internment camp overseas and this is why they were easily forgotten after the war (6.4 Assessing Canada’s War, Ruck 2016). Furthermore, Ruck tells us that black soldiers encountered a lot of racism and poor treatment which helps me connect this theory back to why Jones was not discharged or hospitalized (2016). William enlisted into the No.2 Construction Battalion CEF on September 16th, 1916, in Quebec, Montreal, where he was given the rank of Private, passing his medical examination on September 19th, 1916, he was deemed medically fit (Canada Library and Archives). Prior to enlistment, William lived on 183 Inspector Street, Montreal, Quebec, working as a general Blacksmith (Canada Library and Archives). During William’s time in the military, he left Montreal for Halifax as the No. 2 Construction Battalion would further disembark from England to serve in France with the Forestry Corps in the Jura Mountains located in southeast France (Lindsay, Canadian Encyclopedia) & (Canada Library and Archives). William’s discharge certificate reveals William made it home on February 19th, 1919, with little to no injuries except for two scars left from getting inoculated (Canada Library and Archives). William honorably carried his willingness to serve the Canadian Expeditionary Forces no matter the job, from his enlistment to his Demobilization at the end of the war. Title A name given to the resource Grandville Collymore Description An account of the resource Grandville (sometimes spelt "Granville") Collymore was born on February 14th, 1895, in Granada to parents, Isidore and Alexander Collymore. His father passed away in St. Madeliene Village, Trinidad sometime before his enlistment (Separation Allowance Declaration). He also had a sister, Ilucy, who was seven years younger (Separation Allowance Declaration). Grandville worked as a car builder in Redmans Village, St. Thomas for some unspecified length of time until the onset of The Great War (Separation and Assigned Pay Branch Papers, Medical Examination Certificate). As his mother was disabled and unable to work (Separation Allowance Declaration), she was dependent on the money he made. At the age of 21, Grandville traveled to Truro, Nova Scotia to enlist in the 2nd Construction Battalion. After being approved for service, Grandville was sent off to England on the 4th of April, 1917 (Activity Report). From there, he was sent to France for duties (Activity Report), the specifics of which are unclear. Presumably, Grandville performed all tasks as expected, as there are no records of discipline. Grandville returned to Canada in perfect health (Discharge Medical Examination Papers) after being struck off strength on the 25th of January, 1919 (Activity Report). With the war over, demobilization had him discharged on the 15th of February, 1919 (Discharge Papers). He declared his next of kin to be his sister, Constance Cumberbach,. She resided in the hometown of Clark within the township of Cambridge, St. Joseph. His trade in Barbados was as a miner. He was not married, and belonged to the Chuch of England. He was 21 years old when he enlisted for service. He was medically examined on July 28th, 1916 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. During this time he weighed 168lb and was 5’ 7 1/2” tall. His physical features were black hair, brown eyes and black complexion. The medical examination results deemed him fit for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. He was drafted on July 28th, 1916 and was enlisted in France. He served under the unit of No.2 Construction Battalion. This unit remains as the largest all-Black unit created in the history of Canada. (Ruck, CE) During his time in the force, he was diagnosed with Gonorrhea when examined at the Halifax station. He stayed in the hospital for 13 days, starting on March 18th, 1919 to April 1st, 1919. He was discharged from the service on April 9th, 1919 by reason of demobilization. Title A name given to the resource Ernest Hendrick Bradshaw Description An account of the resource Ernest Bradshaw (243595) was born on December 7th, 1892, in Barbados. When he decided to enlist, he lived at 147 Lusignan in Montreal, Quebec. He declared his mother, Mrs. Rachel Bradshaw, as his next of kin. Ernest Bradshaw was a labourer and part of the Church of England. When he decided to enlist, he was single with no dependents. He enlisted on June 17th, 1916, which made him 24 years old and 6 months. He was 5 foot 6 inches, weighed 160 pounds, and had dark hair and eyes. He enlisted in the No. 2 Construction Battalion which was difficult to get into for many reasons. Many coloured men were told that it was a white man’s war and that their service was not needed (Lindsay, Canadian Encyclopaedia). When he had his medical exam on June 17th, 1916, he was deemed fit and able to enlist. He was a sergeant and enlisted in the Canada Forestry Corps. He served in France which earned him fifteen dollars monthly (Library and Archives Canada). On March 20th, 1917, he was admitted to the hospital due to Fousiltis but was discharged the next day (March 21st, 1917) and returned to service. Title A name given to the resource Anna Irene-Stamers Description An account of the resource After researching the Nursing Sister Anna-Irene Stamers, one was able to get a small idea of what her life was like during the war. While navigating her documents, we came across the Casualty Form which lists everywhere that she had been in service and a timeline of events, including hospitalizations up until her death. This document is interesting as it demonstrates how long she dedicated her life to helping soldiers during the war. From these documents, one can interpret that Anna was in generally in good health aside from contracting an ear infection. Anna continued to serve as a Nursing Sister until June 27th, 1918 when she drowned on the Llandovery Castle Ship. Title A name given to the resource Letita "Etta" Sparks Description An account of the resource Within a year of shipping off across the Atlantic, Letita "Etta" Sparks is diagnosed with a malignancy is her right breast, which is subsequently diagnosed as carcinoma of the breast, ultimately leading to her death in military hospital, late August of 1917. Etta served for months at the 7th General Hospital in France whilst experiencing 'considerable pain', which she did not report until July 26th - less than a month before her death. The assessment finds the case inoperable, and the condition of Nursing Sister Sparks too severe to be 'invalided to Canada'. The officers finding speak to the plausibility of Sparks as as dutiful contribute to the war effort, despite potentially dooming herself by failing to report her own medical condition in time. She seemed to have a simple life that became more eventful as she enters the military. She did not live very long, and the documents do not reveal much about her personal life, she had no kids no husband and there was no mention of friends. I wonder if she enlisted because it was the right thing to do at the time or because she wanted an adventure. I chose this specific document because Mae Belle listed her mother Florence as her next of kin but the other name on her pay is Burt Sampson, it can be assumed that this is her father as Burt and Florence share the same surname. The dates on the document are dated before her death date and this has me wondering if all her pay was addressed to her father. Title A name given to the resource Elsie Gertrude Ross Description An account of the resource Elsie Gertrude Ross was born on June 22nd, 1882, in the city of Zorra, Ontario. She began her career as a teacher with a passion for helping kids before opting to become a nurse to follow her passion for helping all kinds of people. She was a nursing sister in the Canadian Army Medical Corps stationed in the Toronto region. Ross graduated from Toronto General Hospital with a medical degree and used her skills to assist injured soldiers and civilians throughout the war. Likewise, because it contradicted pre-war conceptions about women's obligations in society, Ross and the other nursing sisters' efforts during the war helped to revise sexist views at the time and give women more notary as veterans in war. Ross died of pneumonia while working overseas in the army during the war. Pneumonia was a common cause of death at the time, with little medicine or supplies to help heal people. Nellie Grace was born in London Ontario and later lived with her parents in Listowel. Title A name given to the resource Ada Janet Ross Description An account of the resource Ada Janet Ross was a commendable nursing sister who enlisted with the Canadian Army Medical Corps (CAMC) at 47 years old, notably older than most other nursing sisters who averaged around 25 years old. Looking at her records, Ross was very willing to aid in the war to the best of her abilities. She was compliant, agreeing to be vaccinated and serve in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force, which required a lot of sacrifice as women needed to leave their families behind and remain unmarried. Ada left Halifax in 1915 and arrived in Liverpool a little over a week later. From there, Ada was sent to an array of different hospitals in England and France, and after serving for a few years, she succumbed to a combination of various illnesses in 1918. Title A name given to the resource Agnes McPherson Description An account of the resource Agnes MacPherson was 25 years of age at the time of her enlistment and 27 years at the time of her death. Although her time serving as a Nursing Sister was limited, she was able to help many people while stationed at the 3rd Stationary Hospital in Doullens, France. Agnes spent her time diagnosing and treating soldiers who had been injured in the war. The ratio of Nursing Sisters who served to Nursing Sisters who died is very low (thought to be less than 100 deaths) and so Agnes MacPherson dying via enemy bombing is rare. It was a raid made on the hospital on May 30th, 1918 during her service where bombs were dropped from enemy aircrafts. Agnes was severely wounded and eventually succumbed to her wounds. Everything she possessed was given to her next of kin, Helen Mary MacPherson, her mother as requested by her will. Title A name given to the resource Rena McLean Description An account of the resource Growing up in Souris, Prince Edward Island, at the age of 34, Rena McLean was a trained nurse who applied to join the Army Medical Services. Upon medical examination, McLean was deemed healthy such that she did not present any of the causes of rejection specified in the Regulations for Army Medical Services, and was then thus enlisted on September 28th, 1914, to join the Canadian Army Medical Corp as a nursing sister. During her time within the Canadian Army Medical Corp, McLean had served first on the Royal Red Cross No. 2 Stationary Hospital, for which she was then transferred to work on the Hospital Ship Llandovery Castle. However, on June 27th, 1918, the Llandovery Castle had sunk, allowing officials to presume that McLean had drowned on or since this date. Despite this, McLean, along with many others have been commemorated at the Halifax memorial in Nova Scotia, Canada. Boyd was one who was already trained to save lives. More than likely, she saw the onset of the war as an opportunity to serve her country with bold Canadian patriotism. It can be hypothesized that much like many of her colleagues, she felt inspired to help the war effort in the way she knew best: medical intervention. Being a single, slightly older woman, she may have felt this was the best way to embrace the uncertainty of life in a way that made a difference. Title A name given to the resource Mary Agnes McKenzie Description An account of the resource Mary Agnes McKenzie was born on April 28th, 1880, to Thomas C and Mary B McKenzie. Mary Agnes McKenzie remained single and resided at home with her parents at 290 McPherson Avenue, Toronto, Ontario. McKenzie identified herself as a Presbyterian. McKenzie graduated from the Rochester General Hospital nursing school in 1903 and later enlisted as a nursing sister, January 31st, 1916. McKenzie was stationed at the hospital ship Llandovery Castle. McKenzie contracted Pyorrhoea due to an infection during her service, causing her to go on leave during 1917, however, she remained fit for duty and soon returned. McKenzie was reported missing, assumed to have drowned, on June 27th, 1918, following the torpedoing of the hospital ship Llandovery Castle. Her gravestone resides at Halifax Memorial in Nova Scotia and was erected by the Graduate Nurses of Toronto. Title A name given to the resource Evelyn Verrall McKay Description An account of the resource Evelyn Verall McKay was born on November 24th, 1892, in Galt, Ontario. On November 6th, 1916, she enlisted to the Canadian Army Medical Corps (C.A.M.C) as a Nursing Sister.Before reaching her final rank As a nursing sister in the 3th Canadian General Hospital (Mcgill) (Dannes Camier, Boulogne, France), Evelyn went through years of training in Exhibition camp hospital and Base hospital in Toronto. When the time came, like all Nursing/Medical assistants, she boarded the ship that would take her to Liverpool. After participating and helping those in the first World Warr, On November 4th, 1918, Evelyn was pronounced dead following a battle with broncho-pneumonia. Her body is rested at the Terlincthun British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, VII. C. 26. She was commemorated for her courage in The First World War and received Scrolls and plaques for her efforts.
