Title A name given to the resource Rebecca McIntosh Description An account of the resource Rebecca McIntosh (MacIntosh) was born on June 29th, 1892, in Pleasant Bay, Nova Scotia. On April 5th, 1917, she enlisted to the Canadian Army Medical Corps (C.A.M.C) as a Nursing Sister. On April 27th, she boarded the ship that would take her from Halifax to Liverpool. Following her journey overseas, she was sent to her first location of military medical service, the 10th Canadian General Hospital near Brighton. On December 17th, 1918, she was transferred to her second location of military medical service, the 9th Canadian General Hospital near Bodelwyddan. On March 7, 1919, McIntosh was pronounced dead following a battle with broncho-pneumonia. Her body rests at the St. Margaret Churchyard in Flintshire. McIntosh was commemorated for her efforts in The First World War Book of Remembrance. Title A name given to the resource Margaret Marjory Fraser Description An account of the resource Margaret Marjory Fraser served as an acting Matron inn the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force Unit. She was born on March 20, 1885 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada. At the apparent age of 29 years old in Quebec, on 1914/09/24, Margaret enlisted. She spent most of her service in European waters caring for the sick and wounded. Margaret was single at the time, Presbyterian, had brown hair, blue eyes, weighed 170 pounds and was 5 feet and 7 inches tall. Margaret had been given three awards, the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the 1914-1915 Star. She died on the Llandovery Castle hospital ship when it was torpedoed on June 27, 1918. Fraser was 33. She accounted for one of the many casualties that occurred with the sinking of Llandovery Castle. There is not a lot of specific information of her experiences of the four years that she served, but there are some records of the people that she treated during her service and many files accounting her pay over the years. Frederickson was originally from Skagafjörður, Iceland but was living in Edmonton at the time of her death. She was a graduate nurse of rank Leiut, n/s (nursing sister). Frederickson was originally admitted to the hospital on October 24, 1918 after being sent home from work sick. She was pale and dehydrated and complained of headaches, cough, and occasional vomiting. Frederickson remained in the hospital the next four days with unchanging symptoms; she eventually passed at 5:20 pm on the 28 at the age of 32 from epidemic influenza. Prior to being admitted to the hospital, Fredrickson had been vaccinated once in her left arm. Bertha would find herself working in two military hospitals in England over the course of her service. Bertha proved to be an outstanding nurse and worked through the Spanish flu pandemic of the time in 1918. Bertha cared for many who were infected with the disease and later contracted the virus. Whitely was born in Manvers County, and moved to London, Ontario later on in her life. She worked as a nurse before the war began. She likely was not married and had no children, as she named her sister as her next of kin. Throughout the war, she worked at the 10th Canadian Stationary Hospital. Title A name given to the resource Alexina Dussault Description An account of the resource Alexina Dussault was born in Saint-Hyacinthe on March 5, 1882. Her life, from what I gathered, was one that ended in quite a tragedy. The cause of her death was drowning which, in and of itself, could have been avoidable. She seemed like a person that easily conformed and portrayed her love for the craft, as brought by her willingness to accept the terms of her enlistment. Considering she was single for quite a while, this meant that she fully devoted her efforts strictly to her job/work. She did not have many people to return to, except her small family, which ultimately makes her death rather an unfortunate one. She was eventually buried in Nova Scotia. Overall I could not gather too much information, and judging from the outside would be difficult as I cannot assume how her life was simply based on some details, but I could generalize that she was an honorable worker and devoted her life to the craft. Later, she went to Winnipeg general Hospital School of Nursing. After graduating, she volunteered for Queen Alexandra Imperial Nursing Service. Baker served in the CAMC (Canadian Army Medical Corps) until her death in October of 1918 of Bronchial Pneumonia in England. Baker was originally born in Winnipeg Manitoba in August of 1886, her brother George Baker was a major in the Canadian Armed Forces during the First World War. Miriam's brother was her inspiration to join the war effort. As a single woman, Baker was eligible to serve as a nurse in the Canadian Army Medical Corps. Although there is not too much information regarding Baker's personal life or her time as a nurse in the Army, she can still be regarded as an extremely important part of Canadian women's history at war. She was born in 1886 on October 6th in Orillia, Simcoe, Ontario. She enlisted in the army in the year 1915 on April 7th. Her medical examination report revealed that she was 28 years old, 5 feet 7, 148 pounds at the time of enlistment and that the was nothing wrong with her body therefore making her eligible for enlistment. The examination happened in Toronto, Ontario. Within the army she saw service in France and worked in the 4th Canadian General Hospital (Kalamaria, Greece and Bassingstoke, England). A year later her service came to an end as she had contaminated TB (Tuberculosis) which forced her to be medically discharged because she was unwell and unfit for service. During her service she earned the weekly wage of $50 for a possible total of $900. She died before the war ended. She is a presbyterian. Margaret was Caucasian and she was about 28 years old when she passed. She was about five feet and six inches tall and she weighed one hundred and forty pounds. Her training was as a sister, her departure off the ship was March 21, 1914, and she was a part of the overseas expedition. The hospital she served in was the No.1 General Hospital in Etaples France, where she was ultimately killed by a German air raid that fractured her skull and caused wounds to her chest. She was buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery. She was brought up the Church of England which might have exerted enormous influence on her and remained strong ties with her religious community. Thus, Ida who was unmarried, decided to focus on her career and dedicated her life to saving lives and providing extensive care and attention to the ill and afflicted. She had considerable training and education in her calling as a graduate nurse. At the age of 35, Ida enlisted in the war with the Canadian Medical Army Corps as a Nursing Sister through overseas. In her role, Ida had been stationed in several different hospitals attending to wounded and injured soldiers. In 1916, Ida had faced several health problems including the Influenza virus and symptoms of an inflamed mouth due to an undiagnosed condition at the time. Ida had been delivered treatment, but it did not help as it was later found to be Pneumonia which inevitably led to her death on March 12, 1918. For her significant contributions in the war, Ida was awarded the British Medal, Victory Medal and the 1914-1915 Star which is indicated in her medal card. Lenna was a daughter of Baptist Rev. John Hugh and Mary Fisher Jenner, sister to Hugh Burton Jenner and Ada Blanche Ross. Lenna enlisted into the Canadian Army Corps (M.D,6th) on June 25, 1918, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Lenna was sent to England to be a nursing sister. On October 18, 1918, Lenna went to the West Cliffe Eye & Ear Hospital in Folkstone, England, because of losing length, weight, and pain in the left side after exertion. The examination of the heart and lungs was negative, but there was considerable swelling of the abdomen, particularly on the left side. On December 10, 1918, Lenna became ill, receiving abdominal surgery. On December 12, 1918, Lenna died of natural causes. The medical records reveal that Leanna died of Septicemia or blood poising as it is commonly known. Lenna’s final resting place is at the Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey, United Kingdom. She comes from a small town in Quebec called St. Jean where she lived with her father, who is also her next of kin. She enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps on July 4th, 1918 to help with the repercussions of the First World War. She stayed within Canada during her enlistment, helping those coming home wounded or sick at the Fredericton Memorial Hospital. This would ultimately also be where Agnes passed. She passed away on October 12th, 1918 after a battle with influenza. It would also be the second time that she caught and battled influenza, but unfortunately this time she did not make it.
