After his move to Manitoba, his name was then changed from Semperius to St. Pierre on his documents as that was a more “Christian” name. He was a widowed man with no children who enlisted in the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Forces. After his medical exam on June 1st, 1916, he was deemed fit to serve. He completed 5 years in the US Cavalry (part time as cook) and spent six months in Capt. A. Co. 5th. Illinois Battalion. He also took part in both the 24th and 27th Battalion. The highest rank George achieved before being discharged was a private. He was discharged September 14th, 1918, after being deemed medically unfit. He was ill several times including bronchitis (France, May 6th, 1916, to August 5th, 1916, debility (France March 1917), syphilis (Winnipeg, 23/4/18 to 24/4/18), chronic bronchitis (Tuxedo Park, Winnipeg, 18/5/18 to 13/8/18), dental treatment (July 20, 1918). Finally on August 1st, 1918, the hospital states that their help will no longer benefit him.
